Case, features and operation - Handy cell phone
Externally, nothing has changed compared to the predecessor; the King Kong Mini 2 looks exactly like its predecessor. That means: The typical outdoor look with rubber and metal in a very handy 4-inch format, plus a flap with real screws that hide the two SIM slots and the microSD slot. The casing still does not offer IP certification, but it is supposed to be protected against splash water and dust according to the manufacturer.
The price has increased to at least 119 Euros online, and is thus 10 Euros higher than the predecessor at launch. 32 GB of mass storage and 3 GB of RAM are quite OK as features, the WLAN offers significantly higher transfer rates than the first King Kong Mini in our test with the reference router Netgear Nighthawk AX12.
As in the predecessor, the handy smartphone is well suited for people with small hands and children, but you should also keep in mind that buttons and especially the keyboard are very small in this size. The smartphone lies well in the hand and can be operated quite accurately. Only conventional methods or face recognition can be used for unlocking; there is no fingerprint sensor.

Cameras - Little offered
Nothing has changed in terms of camera compared to the predecessor either: The manufacturer still installs a 13-megapixel module on the back, which is supported by a 2-megapixel camera for portrait effects. The main camera can hardly be used in low light. Either nothing can be seen in the pictures or they are blurry.
There are also problems in daylight, where bright areas are quickly outshined and the main subject looks washed out. You can use the camera for snapshots, but you should not expect high quality.
The front-facing camera has a resolution of 8 megapixels. It takes decent selfies in normal lighting, but they could use more sharpness.
Videos can be recorded in 1080p, the quality is similar to the photos, so you should not expect too much here.

Display - Brighter but inaccurate
Fortunately, Cubot has managed to increase the screen's maximum brightness: We measured an average of 633 cd/m², which is an acceptable value for an outdoor smartphone that you can still work with in brighter environments.
However, the black value has also increased in return and thus the contrast ratio is worse than in the predecessor. The color reproduction is a bit more accurate than in the predecessor, but still only on an average level. Grayscale is a bit too dark, but we did not notice a blue cast.

The screen shows good response rates in our tests, but may be too slow for competitive gamers. This means that the measured response time is similar to the average of all tested devices (22.2 ms).

The screen shows slow response rates in our tests and will be unsatisfactory for gamers. In comparison, all tested devices range from 0.25 (minimum) to 636 (maximum) ms. » 74 % of all devices are better. This means that the measured response time is worse than the average of all tested devices (35.1 ms). |
Screen Flickering / PWM (Pulse-Width Modulation)
Screen flickering / PWM detected | 354.6 Hz | ≤ 15 % brightness setting
The display backlight flickers at 354.6 Hz (Likely utilizing PWM) Flickering detected at a brightness setting of 15 % and below. There should be no flickering or PWM above this brightness setting. The frequency of 354.6 Hz is relatively high, so most users sensitive to PWM should not notice any flickering. However, there are reports that some users are still sensitive to PWM at 500 Hz and above, so be aware. In comparison: 53 % of all tested devices do not use PWM to dim the display. If PWM was detected, an average of 19210 (minimum: 5 - maximum: 3846000) Hz was measured. |
Performance, emissions and battery life - Even more battery power
As in the predecessor, the MediaTek Helio A22 is used as the SoC. It is sufficient for a reasonably smooth system operation and also for simple apps, but you should not expect too much in terms of performance.
As already noticed in the King Kong Mini, cooling is difficult in the small case and the chassis heats up to over 45 °C during longer load periods. This can be unpleasant on warm days and affect the system performance.
The speaker is located on the back, which is not ideal; it can easily be covered with the hand. The speaker is moderately loud and the sound is a bit more linear than in the predecessor. However, music does not sound that good and trebles are sometimes unpleasantly overemphasized.
The battery has a 50% higher capacity compared to the battery in the King Kong Mini. This only results in a slightly improved runtime, but it is a welcome improvement since the smartphone's weight has not changed.

Verdict - A small update
The Cubot King Kong Mini 2 is interesting for those who want a really compact smartphone. You should not rely too much on the smartphone's outdoor capabilities. It does feel secure in the hand thanks to the rubber coating, and a minimal protrusion of the casing also protects the screen. But there is no IP certification and you do not get a warranty for water damage either.
Like its predecessor, the Mini 2 is once again a well-equipped phone for its price range and even goes one better in terms of WLAN speed. In addition, there are decent runtimes and a bright screen. However, the color reproduction and contrast should be less important, and the outdoor smartphone is not a camera champion: The main camera does not see anything in low light, and even normal exposure only produces usable pictures at best.
The Cubot King Kong Mini 2 is an exceptionally compact smartphone with decent features. However, little has changed compared with the predecessor.
The changes compared to the first King Kong Mini are rather minor. You can save a good 30 Euros if you buy the predecessor. We would currently also recommend doing so, unless every second of battery life and a very bright screen are important to you.
Price and availability
The Cubot King Kong Mini 2 is currently only available at amazon.de in German-speaking countries. The cheapest offer there is 119 Euros (~$119).
