According to the Financial Times (via Gadgets360), there has been a significant growth in phishing attacks that use AI to make them appear more human and evade security filters.
These attacks are aimed at corporate executives in companies like eBay and insurance firm Beazley. The fraudulent emails contain personal information about the employees to make them more enticing to click on.
Phishing attacks are fake emails or messages that are designed to trick people into clicking on malicious URLs or installing malware. A popular example of phishing is the Nigerian Prince scam, which promised a large sum of money in return for assistance.
These AI-based attacks, however, seem more complex. They seem to be based on large amounts of data about the employees that were scraped from social media and other sources and convincing enough to trick traditional security filters.
According to Check Point, Microsoft was the most imitated brand in phishing attempts, accounting for 38% of all brand phishing attempts in the first quarter of 2024. Google and LinkedIn were the next on the list, with 11% each.
