In a string of attacks that may have been connected, a Tesla Cybertruck was rented on Turo, loaded with fireworks, gas tanks, and camping fuel, then detonated in front of the Trump Hotel in Las Vegas.
In the aftermath of the attack, Elon Musk commented that Tesla's electric truck that is made of stainless steel may have been the worst possible choice for those who organized the explosion. Its body panels are nearly twice thicker than regular sheet metal used for manufacturing other trucks, limiting the blast's radius to a greater extent.
Law enforcement has now released pictures of the Cybertruck, and it seems that the stainless steel exterior of the Cybertruck indeed helped contain the damage. The truck bed that was loaded with explosives didn't fly out, and the exterior went largely unscathed, while even the tires seemingly stayed intact instead of blowing out or deflating.
As per a law enforcement official, the Cybertruck's build may have helped contain the destruction from the explosives' detonation indeed:
The fact that this was a Cybertruck really limited the damage that occurred. It had most of the blast go up through the truck and out. The front glass doors at the Trump hotel were not even broken by the blast, which they were directly in front of.
Elon Musk and the Tesla team were in contact with the Las Vegas law enforcement officials investigating the blast, advising them on how the Cybertruck "locked after it exploded due to the nature of the force from the explosion."
As a result, only the person inside the Cybertruck who reportedly detonated the vehicle had perished, while seven other people nearby sustained minor injuries as the stainless steel pickup kept the explosion largely contained.
