CONTROL Resonant is now the fastest-selling Remedy game to date. This happened shortly before it crossed the 1 million copies sold milestone in 3 weeks.

Control Resonant is the long-awaited sequel to Renedy Entertainment’s 2019 GOTY nominee Control. Control was a critical success, with many praising the intricately crafted universe and unique gameplay. The sequel launched on September 24 this year and has been a resounding success like its predecessor, earning high praise for its intense, hack-and-slash-inspired combat paired with Remedy’s trademark storytelling.

Yesterday, on October 15, Remedy announced across its socials that Control Resonant had reached the 1-million-copies-sold milestone 3 weeks after launch. Compared with other recent AAA releases like Subnautica 2 and Wardogs, this might not seem impressive, since Subnautica 2 reached that milestone in 12 hours and Wardogs needed only a day. However, given Remedy’s history with game sales, this achievement is worth celebrating.

Why was this financial milestone so crucial for Remedy?

While Remedy’s games are widely appreciated, that appreciation doesn't always translate into sales. The studio has struggled financially over the past few years, with 2022’s Alan Wake 2 being the prime case. Alan Wake 2 had been in development for a while, but the studio couldn't secure the funds needed to finance the project. Eventually, Epic Games agreed to fund development on the condition that the game be an Epic Games Store exclusive on PC.

This decision would greatly hurt the game’s sales. Although the game was nominated for Game of the Year at the Game of the Year Awards 2023, it still failed to turn a profit until a year after its release. The game’s absence on Epic’s rival Steam, the primary platform for purchasing games on PC, and overall user dissatisfaction with the Epic Games Store's quality were the main reasons it failed to hit the mark at launch.

A Bright Future for Remedy

Remedy’s CEO Jean-Charles Gaudechon released an official statement commenting on the achievement: "One million copies is a very strong start. Control Resonant is Remedy's first self-published release of this scale, launched into one of the most competitive windows in years alongside the industry's biggest names. The game is unmistakably Remedy, with the bold ideas and distinctive style our players have come to expect from us. A huge thank you goes to our players and to the team, who have made Control Resonant the incredible game that it is."

Control Resonant is a self-published title, with Annapurna Interactive only co-financing and co-producing. This means that more sales will allow Remedy to pursue more opportunities and continue their work on beloved franchises like Alan Wake and Control. Fans are still eagerly awaiting the Max Payne 1 and 2 remakes announced in 2022; the latest update is that the remakes entered full production in 2024, with a release expected in 2027.
