Company behind Turing Phone has filed for bankruptcy

The company Turing Robotics Industries has filed for bankruptcy in Finland. The company was supposed to start the production of Turing Phones in a factory formerly used by Nokia but wasn’t successful in doing so.

According to a local Finnish newspaper, the company had to file for bankruptcy and has a debt of 1.9 million Euros. Turing Robotics was reportedly paying tens of thousands of Euros each month for rent and other costs in order to operate in the previous Nokia factory in Salo, Finland.

The Turing Phone was announced in 2015 and featured a premium design as well as a heavy focus on system security. The phone’s enclosure is made of a zirconium, aluminum, copper, nickel and titanium alloy. The company originally intended to use Android as the operating system, although Turing Robotics switched to Sailfish OS in 2016. A number of Turing Phones were produced but specific numbers were never disclosed. The company also announced the Appassionato phone in 2017 with a Snapdragon 821 system-on-a-chip and Android Nougat, yet it was never made available for purchase.

The company was planning to shift the production of the Turing Phone from the United States to Finland and employ hundreds of people. Turing Robotics Industries filed for bankruptcy before production in Finland could begin.

At the moment, it is still unclear whether or not the company's operations in the United States will cease as well.
