Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 is a hugely successful game that has left a lasting impression on millions of people around the world. And this, notably thanks to its soundtrack, which transports fans with breathtaking songs, but also thanks to its memorable ending. Regarding this element, the lead writer points out that there are no right or wrong choices.
During an interview with Lits Play, Jennifer Svedberg-Yen, the lead writer of Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, responded to the many rumors circulating on the internet claiming that there is a good ending and a bad ending:
"I tell everyone there is no correct ending, there is no canon ending, there is no official Sandfall ending. Both endings are there for a reason, we put them both there for a reason, they were designed in a very particular way. Neither is perfect. Both are heartbreaking in their own ways. Both of them have parts of them that make you glad, that make you feel like 'I want a happy ending for these characters', but both of them have their own cost. It's a reflection of reality, a lot of times, some people's happiness does come with its cost, things are rarely perfect”.
In other words, every choice has consequences for the characters. And that's not all, because at Sandfall Interactive, there were many discussions about a confrontation between good and evil. And Svedberg-Yen explained that this choice was rejected so that players could understand both points of view:
"In this instance, we wanted to focus on the fact that because both sides care, they have different perspectives on how best to move forward. They care about each other, and they care about each other's future. The player can decide for themselves what is the right ending based upon their own perspective.”
As a result, each ending corresponds to the choices made by players during their adventure in this unique world. And that could help explain some twists and turns.
