Cheaper BMW i4 base model with 70 kWh battery and 281 electric horsepower to launch later this year
Despite disrupted supply chains and the resulting steep prices, electric cars are selling like hotcakes in many markets around the world. Apparently, this also applies to the stylish BMW i4, whose cheapest model variant, the so-called "eDrive40", currently starts at a list price of US$55,900 in the US. However, the upcoming introduction of a new rear-wheel-drive base model with a smaller battery will soon lower the entry level price for the luxurious electric sedan that is currently built in Munich, Germany.
Enter the BMW i4 eDrive35, the new base model with rather modest 210 kW of power and 400 Nm of torque, which is now scheduled to launch in Germany this November following its official reveal in North America last month. Its 285 electric horsepower will accelerate the premium EV from 0 to 60 mph in just under six seconds, but there seems to be no info on the top speed yet. The battery of the BMW i4 eDrive35 has also shrunk in comparison to the more expensive model variants, it now has a gross capacity of 70 kWh, 66 kWh of which are usable.
The cheapest BMW i4 has an official WLTP range of up to 300 miles, while the maximum charging capacity has been reduced from 205 to 180 kW. However, thanks to the lower battery capacity, the electric sedan can still be charged from 0 to 80 in about half an hour at an according DC fast charging station. Prices for the new BMW i4 eDrive35 will start at US$51,400 in the United States, first deliveries of the Tesla Model 3 competitor in the US are scheduled to take place in the first quarter of 2023.
