Razer Edge 5G handheld gaming console teased ahead of October 15 launch
Leaks about Razer entering the handheld gaming console market emerged late last year. It was rumoured to use a Qualcomm Snapdragon G3X Gen 1 chip. Verizon (of all companies) has now confirmed that it will be called the Razor Edge 5G. The Tweet revealing it gives us a glance at the console's design and hints at a Dualsense-like haptic feedback feature for the trigger buttons. Razer will properly unveil the console on October 15 at RazerCon.
Qualcomm revealed the Razer Edge 5G's design earlier this year. It resembles a hybrid between a console controller and a handheld gaming console, complete with thick bezels and a relatively small screen compared to the chassis. Razer has even thrown in an iPhone-style notch with a webcam, presumably to facilitate live streaming. Verizon's press release isn't particularly helpful either, as it focuses more on its 5G network, leaving the Razer Edge 5G as a mere footnote.
Unfortunately, Qualcomm has been intentionally vague with the Snapdragon G3X Gen 1's specifications. Its official website states that it features an Adreno GPU, Kryo CPU, a 5G radio, Wi-Fi 6E and the ability to output 4K video to a TV. The CPU/GPU are likely from an older generation and might not be able to keep up with the likes of the much beefier x86-based hardware from Steam, Aya Neo and GPD. The Razer Edge 5G will probably serve as a cloud gaming console like the Logitech G.
BREAKING: @Verizon, @Razer and @Qualcomm are teaming up on the world's first 5G mobile gaming handheld—Razer Edge 5G! It will allow you to play your favorite games regardless of whether you are gaming in the cloud, on an app or streaming from your console. https://t.co/TYPw5xFyeF pic.twitter.com/F9Vg3CfABl
