Deal | “Celebrated on Steam, and rightly so” – popular tactical RPG finally available again for under $10
Battle Brothers is a turn-based tactical RPG developed by Overhype Studios and released in 2017 in partnership with Hooded Horse. At launch, the German gaming magazine GameStar noted that the game was “celebrated on Steam, and rightly so.” The story centers on the cunning outlaw Hoggart the Weasel – but you do not play as him; you are hunting him. The game opens just after Hoggart ambushes a mercenary company sent to capture him, leaving only three survivors. From there, you rebuild the group, take on contracts and tough battles, and work to finally bring the elusive rogue to justice.
In the game, you lead your mercenary company across a sprawling world map, recruit new fighters, negotiate with traders and do your best to keep the group stable both morally and financially. Battles unfold on a hex-based grid in classic turn-based fashion, where smart positioning, stamina management and choosing the right weapons make all the difference. The combat system has been well received, with GameStar noting that it offers a tactically demanding experience.
Another key part of Battle Brothers is managing your mercenary company. Each companion can suffer injuries or develop lasting traumas from battle, making them feel more human – and with the permadeath system in place, losing a veteran fighter can hit surprisingly hard. GameStar also pointed out several drawbacks, including a heavy reliance on luck in combat, dated visuals and limited animations. The storytelling was viewed as fairly shallow as well. Still, the game earned a respectable 78 out of 100 from GameStar. Since then, Battle Brothers has built a strong reputation, with more than 25,000 Steam reviews – 88% of them positive – and a Metascore of 80 along with a 7.8 User Score on Metacritic.

Battle Brothers usually sells for around $30 on Steam, but for the first time since March 2025 it is now 70% off, bringing the price down to about $9. According to SteamDB, this matches the tactical RPG’s lowest price to date. The game runs smoothly on the Steam Deck as well (currently listed at $730 on Amazon). The offer is available until December 9.
