The British camera retailer PPP Cameras has developed the so-called Casio M-Edition in collaboration with the well-known Japanese brand. The watch is apparently based on the Casio AE-1200WH series (from $46 on Amazon) but comes with numerous design changes that are inspired by Leica M rangefinder cameras.
Most notably, the round dial in the upper left corner of the front is covered with a red window instead of a transparent one, as this red circle is an obvious reference to the Leica logo. The LED which illuminates the dial glows red on the Casio M-Edition, which PPP Cameras says is a nod to the LED used in the light meters of classic Leica M cameras. Furthermore, the leather strap is meant to replicate the leather covering of the Leica M, although the watch uses a band with a relatively smooth surface rather than the more pronounced leather texture that Leica typically uses.
The Casio M-Edition is available in silver and black, and the black version features a negative segment display that shows white numerals on a black background. This might be visually appealing but can reduce readability in low-light conditions. The new Casio watch supports four time zones, five alarms, a stopwatch and a timer. Additionally, it is water-resistant up to 10 ATM, and the battery is said to last ten years.
Price and availability
The Casio M-Edition is sold by PPP Cameras in the UK and is priced at £150. The retailer also ships to other European countries, in which case additional shipping and import fees might apply.
