Specs for the long-awaited Canon EOS R1 have leaked online. They hint at a solid high-performance camera to challenge the likes of the Nikon Z9 and Sony A9 III with a lightning-fast electronic shutter, 12-bit, 6.7K, 60 fps video, and 120 fps continuous shooting.

In the eyes of many professionals and camera enthusiasts, Canon has fallen behind in the high-end camera market, especially since the release of the shutterless Nikon Z9 (curr. $5,496.95 on Amazon) and Sony A9 III (curr. $5,999.99 on Amazon) with its global shutter. While this sentiment might hold some water, new leaks posted to Weibo (shared by Digital Camera World) indicate that Canon should soon be back in the race for the best professional-grade camera with the launch of the R1.

The highlight of the supposed leaked spec sheet is the 30 MP sensor with a "rolling electronic shutter faster than any mechanical rolling shutter" and some impressive video specifications, including 12-bit 6.7K video recording at 60 fps. The full post leaked specs list reads as follows, courtesy of a machine translation:

Possession of unknown credibility:

EOS R1, approximate performance is called:
High-speed autofocus and exposure enhanced by AI recognition.

  • Moving object trajectory prediction, high success rate smart object lock focus tracking.
  • 30-megapixel full-frame stacked dual-core focus sensor.
  • Purely electronic rolling shutter faster than any mechanical rolling shutter.
  • 1/1250s flash sync time.
  • (<0.8ms microsecond reading time).
  • Added 1:3 lossy compression CRAW (compared to lossless compression).
  • Unlimited 40fps(1:2 CRAW) / 60fps(1:3 CRAW) continuous shooting, up to 120fps full-featured continuous shooting.
  • Supports 240fps burst burst shooting mode and 1s pre-shooting.
  • Enhanced dynamic range, better than EOS R3 and EOS R5.
  • 16Bit DGO-RAW photo capture supporting two benchmarks.
  • In-camera depth of field stack RAW.
  • 6.7K/60p & 4.2K/120p(APS-C) 12bit Cinema RAW Light recording.
  • Full frame/APS-C DCI/UHD 4K/120p C-log2 & C-log3 video recording.
  • Sleek body optimized for maximum hand feel.

The validity of these leaked specifications is admittedly sketchy, but it does make for an exciting prospect as far as a flagship camera body goes.

Currently, Canon's mirrorless camera line-up tops out at the EOS R3 (curr. on sale for $4,999 on Amazon), which is a mighty camera in its own right, although it struggles somewhat to compete against the likes of Sony's and Nikon's best.
