For distraction-free writing, BYOK allows users to transform virtually any keyboard into a digital typewriter. The gadget has a display that should be readable in direct sunlight as well as at night, while its battery lasts for up to 20 hours.

BYOK stands for "bring your own keyboard," and the name is quite fitting for this small gadget which provides everything needed for distraction-free writing, apart from the keyboard itself. While the setup is slightly more involved, it has the advantage that users can utilize any keyboard they prefer, so there’s free choice in terms of layout, size and switches.

The gadget is compatible with most modern keyboards, provided they can be connected via USB or Bluetooth. Written text is displayed on an FSTN LCD, which cannot show any colors but remains readable in sunlight and can also be used at night thanks to an integrated backlight. Although the manufacturer has not specified the screen size, the device measures 6.46 x 3.11 x 0.59 inches, which means it’s roughly the size of a typical smartphone.

Texts are stored on a microSD card and can be synchronized via WiFi in order to make them available on other devices. The built-in battery has a runtime of up to 20 hours and charges via USB-C. Aside from a battery indicator, a word counter and a storage indicator, BYOK offers only a few other features. Therefore, the device doesn’t offer spell-checking, and formatting is limited to three fonts in three different sizes.

Price and availability

The BYOK is scheduled to go on sale for $169 as part of a preorder promotion. Its price is expected to rise to $200 after that. Please note that these prices do not include shipping or import fees. The official product page offers an email sign up for further updates on this interesting gadget.
