Samsung refreshed its Galaxy Watch series with three models earlier this month, one of which is the Galaxy Watch 8. Although the new model brings a few upgrades and new features, last year's Galaxy Watch 7 is still worth buying, particularly now that it is on sale.
The Galaxy Watch 7 (40mm Bluetooth version) is currently available to buy from Amazon for $159.99, a 47% discount off its list price of $299.99. The LTE version of the Galaxy Watch 7 is also on sale for $259.99 which is 26% off its $349.99 list price. For comparison, the Galaxy Watch 8 (40mm) Bluetooth version is available to preorder for $349.99 while the LTE version costs $50 more.
The deal on the 40mm Bluetooth version is currently limited to the Cream color option while the 40mm LTE version can be purchased in Cream or Green.
When compared to the Galaxy Watch 8, the Galaxy Watch 7 isn't missing out on much. The 40mm Galaxy Watch 8 has a 1.34-inch display that has a peak brightness of 3,000 nits whereas the Galaxy Watch 7 has a 1.31-inch screen that reaches a peak brightness level of 2,000 nits.
Both watches are powered by the Exynos W1000, although Samsung claims that the one inside the Galaxy Watch 8 is an improved variant. They also both have 2GB of RAM and 32GB of storage. It is important to mention that the new Galaxy Watch 8 is lighter and slimmer, too.
The Galaxy Watch 8 and Galaxy Watch 7 have health tracking features such as ECG, Blood pressure monitoring, skin temperature sensor, BIA (bioelectrical impedance analysis), sleep apnea, and energy score. However, Samsung has added the ability for the Galaxy Watch 8 to measure a user's antioxidant index (carotenoid levels) and vascular load (stress on the vascular system during sleep). There's also a running coach under sports tracking.
The Galaxy Watch 8 also has a slightly larger 325mAh battery capacity despite being slimmer while the Galaxy Watch 7 has a 300mAh battery. Save for these differences, and of course, the new look, there's not much you'll be missing if you choose to buy the Galaxy Watch 7. Samsung has also promised that the Galaxy Watch 7 will receive software updates through to 2028.
