We mostly see gaming laptops as a machine designed for what they are, for games, while productivity and multitasking come second. With the ROG Zephyrus Duo, we now have something that can satisfy not just the gamers but serious creators who need the versatility provided by a secondary screen. Even if they’re away from their external monitor planted on their desktops, they can still have some of those multitasking capabilities.

The Asus ROG Zephyrus Duo 15 is an eye-catching gaming laptop that looks to pack as much horsepower as it can into an impressively sleek design. The specs look set to rival the best of the best when it comes to gaming and creative workstations – and it has a hefty price to reflect this. It's obviously the dual-screen setup that's most fascinating, but whether Asus can get the developer support to make the most of it remains to be seen.

This is the ROG Zephyrus Duo 15 and it’s ASUS’ latest flagship 15-inch gaming notebook.Predictably, it’s packed with the latest and greatest in gaming hardware, so let’s talk about its design first. It’s called the Zephyrus Duo for a reason, and that’s because it has dual screens. The concept is not new, ASUS already has two dual screens notebook already in the market in the form of the ZenBook Pro Duo UX581 and the smaller ZenBook Duo UX481. But it’s a first for ASUS' gaming-centric ROG brand.

As far as price and availability goes, we have no idea. It’s also not out of the question that there’s going to be significant delays getting this notebook here because of the medical emergency we’re all experiencing.

You can never have enough of a good thing and the newly announced ROG Zephyrus Duo 15 is perfect evidence of that as it takes everything gamers want in a gaming laptop – a svelte design and powerful specs – then, dials it to 11 while adding in a little something extra: a tilted 14-inch 4K touchscreen dubbed the ROG ScreenPad Plus that acts as a secondary interface and to offer more screen real estate.

Asus Zephyrus Duo 15 GX550LXS-HC029R
The Asus Zephyrus Duo 15 GX550LXS is a unique gaming laptop and the latest to join the Asus family. This laptop definitely does not fall into an everyday gaming-laptop category due to its design. The keyboard and the touchpad are not situated in their usual positions, as Asus has placed a secondary (touchscreen) display in their usual spot. The laptop comes with a matte 15.6-inch display with a resolution of 3840 x 2160 pixels. In terms of its performance, the octa-core Core-i9-10980HK CPU and a GeForce RTX 2080 Super Max-Q GPU deliver enough performance for gaming and a premium user experience.
As far as the design is concerned, the Asus Zephyrus has a grey metal case along with the Screenpad Plus, which is the secondary display mentioned earlier. This touchscreen has to be the main attraction of this model, and it is located right above the keyboard for greater convenience. Owing to its strategic location, the Screenpad can be raised to be angled towards the user when the laptop is opened. It should be noted that the angle is fixed to 13 degrees and cannot be adjusted. The reason for such an angled elevation is due to the fact that there are two airflow vents just beneath the Screenpad Plus which are responsible for allowing cool air to travel into the case for cooling.
In terms of the keyboard itself, the Zephyrus comes with a backlit chiclet keyboard. The keys are flat and smooth with a short travel distance and a distinct actuation point. Overall, the keyboard area does not yield while typing. The lack of a palm rest might make the typing experience less comfortable for some users, but the wrist rest that comes as an accessory with this laptop might just help to create more ease while typing. Apart from that, the RGB backlighting can be adjusted according to the user’s preferences through the preinstalled Asus Aura software. While it can be said that Asus has delivered a keyboard that is suitable for daily use, it is not really a great choice for regular typing tasks. As for the touchpad, it is located to the right of the keyboard in an upright position. The space is definitely sufficient for gesture controls.
The Asus Zephyrus Duo has been equipped with three USB Type-A ports and a Thunderbolt-3 port. However, it should be noted that the laptop does not include a card reader. As mentioned earlier, the main attraction of this laptop has to be its secondary display. It has a matte layer and a native resolution of 3840 x 1100 pixels, and it supports active pens. Asus has improved upon Apple’s Touchbar concept, making it possible to move applications or their control/navigation/input elements to the touchscreen. In a nutshell, the laptop definitely has some great things to offer, though there are some drawbacks as well. But the choice of owning one remains absolutely subjective, depending on the user’s choice and preference.

The Asus ROG Zephyrus Duo is a fascinating gaming laptop thanks to its dual-screen setup, but has such an extravagant price that it's only really recommended for those who will get the most out of it. With limited software support, it's not very useful to your average gamer, but those who stream games to Twitch will no doubt find the extra screen space and touch interface invaluable.

Sometimes the easiest way for me to review something is to ask myself: “when the manufacturer takes this back … am I gonna feel compelled to buy one of my own?” And thanks to a thrilling year in PC gaming and a winter that looks like it might be long one, when it comes to the ASUS ROG Zephyrus Duo 15, that answer is a strong “yes.”

Due to the ASUS ROG Zephyrus Duo 15’s unique design and abilities, the machine finds itself at a crossroad: on one hand, the machine is, beyond a shadow of a doubt, the beastly gaming machine that ASUS had portrayed it to be. It guarantees a smooth experience in that aspect, whatever the title. However, that promise only holds true provided you’re willing to scale down the resolution to Full HD. To that end, I strongly recommend that you get the model with the 300Hz Full HD Display if you’re intention is to simply game on this machine.

So, my closing statement is this. I like the innovations taken here and the ROG Zephyrus Duo 15 is an interesting peek at what the future of mobile PC gaming could look like. The Zephyrus Duo 15 is already one of the best 15-inch high-end gaming notebook I've come across this year – it’s got top-notch performance, beautiful and unique screens and an exceptional build quality. It’s also very expensive and not exactly portable, but if you could live with that and have the dollars to match your pursuit for a top-of-the-line gaming notebook despite these unusual times, then I can't think of a better recommendation. And that's why this notebook deserves our Editor's Choice seal of approval.

change my gears and hardware like I change clothes, but I have a strict exception for my personal laptop. I need to be able to do things fastest and at its highest efficiency on it. I don’t settle for less, and I often pay a heavy premium for owning some of the finest legends that has walked the earth. I don’t compromise, so it’s extremely hard to satisfy my needs when it comes to my portable companion. When I bought my MSI GS65, I told myself that I will be good for at least 5 years and two years into owning it, this is the first time I see the urge of upgrading to this.

We fully expected to ignore the Armoury Crate software as utilities generally deliver little value and potentially cause problems. In the event we were happy with Armoury Crate and were fairly impressed by the way the laptop switches between Silent, Performance and Turbo Modes on the fly. We think you will agree after watching our video that Silent Mode is not completely accurate and might better be named ‘Quiet’. Performance and Turbo Modes are well named but might perhaps come with a warning notice that you will need headphones to keep the noise at bay.

The ASUS ROG Zephyrus Duo 15 is the first laptop to really make good use of a second display. That gives it not only a strong wow factor but makes it easier to justify the extra expense. ASUS backs it up with top flight components that help it fly for gaming and content creation tasks. The downsides are mediocre battery life, a lack of key ports and a high price tag. If you can afford it, though, you’ll be the envy of all your friends, whether in a creative or gaming environment.

The Duo 15 looks stunning and is more refined and powerful than previous ASUS dual-display laptops and that might tempt early adopters who want to both impress their friends and still beat them at Far Cry 5. On the downside, it’s also heavier and more expensive than a normal 15-inch laptop. Now, let’s find out if it can go beyond that initial “wow” factor and justify its $3,000 starting price.

There’s a lot to unpack with the ROG Zephyrus Duo, but we’ll start with the performance. If you believe us that the subpar performance on light gaming tasks is probably a temporary issue, the takeaway is that it’s very fast for its weight and stature. We suspect as we see another three or five 15-inch laptops with similar part combinations, most will settle down closer to the Gigabyte Aero 17 or MSI GS66 Stealth in performance. Asus’ use of liquid metal and better cooling paths simply makes it the laptop to beat, and we’re not sure others in the same class of laptop can do that.

All this work Asus has put into the ROG Zephyrus Duo would be meaningless if it weren't worth the effort to have a second display. The primary display in our case is a 15.6-inch 60Hz 4K panel. It's factory-calibrated, G-Sync-certified, and can hit 100 percent of Adobe RGB. It's not particularly bright at a measured 300 nits. Asus offers this as a compromise for those who want to do content creation on the laptop. That's fine, but for a gaming laptop, we think the other option might be better: a 300Hz 1080p display.

As for the performance and thermals aspects, sure, those are going to heavily weigh in your decision as well, but I don’t think they’re not going to be unique to this laptop and I expect other OEMs to offer similar hardware in their top-tier models as well throughout this year. I do know Asus will in their ROG Scar models, and I can’t imagine others won’t. Otherwise, though, these Asus notebooks going to be at a great advantage over the competition, as the AMD Ryzen 5000 + Nvidia RTX 3000 hardware is a significant leap over the previous gens, from the little I can tell so far. Can’t wait for the review samples so I can share more with you.

The addition of a secondary display added a freshness to the laptop and also brought a new way to work. More conservative buyers may feel that despite all the features on offer and remarkable specs, for every area where the Zephyrus Duo triumphs, it's somewhat hindered by practical concerns. The high-end components and the ScreenPad inflate the price, and with alternative components not far behind in terms of performance and other laptops without second screens proving far more affordable, it leaves the GX551 a more ideal option for hardcore users only.

The Zephyrus Duo has more power than any other laptop we’ve tested. The dual-screen design can be useful in some scenarios, and the machine is surprisingly slim. The second screen is hardly an essential, though, and it hampers keyboard and trackpad quality. Also, the GPU can’t handle demanding 4K gaming, and the Asus is expensive and sometimes hot and loud. If you’ve got money to burn and you’ll benefit from the second screen, then the Asus is an impressive showcase of new technology, but most people will be better off saving a big chunk of money and buying a conventional laptop.

The ROG Zephyrus Duo 15 SE builds upon its predecessor in a pretty big way. The display has been upgraded to a 4K 120Hz panel, which provides the sharpness I expect of a flagship-class content creator laptop in 2021, without sacrificing on the fluidity that I want on a gaming laptop. The display is without a doubt the perfect balance between the two worlds. To support the more demanding display, the CPU and GPU under the hood is also significantly beefier, and yet the ROG Zephyrus Duo 15 SE still deliver better battery life than its predecessor. But these are not the only impressive things about the ROG Zephyrus Duo 15 SE.

The cooling system is improved, too, to make sure you can keep those new components running at top performance. While much of the rest of the Duo remains unchanged from last year, Asus did add one small new feature: A microSD 4.0 card reader.

Regardless of its freaky look, and inspiring features, the ROG Zephyrus Duo 15 SE (GX551) is one of the best gaming notebooks on the market right now. Some of this may be because of clever engineering. Not only because of the use of liquid metal for the CPU die, but also because the inclusion of a secondary display, that tilts towards the user, allows for more air to enter the chassis. Of course, for that to happen, the manufacturer has to do their homework. And ASUS definitely did. With the help of the additional grills beneath the ROG ScreenPad Plus, we see a decrease in GPU temperatures, compared to the ROG Strix G17 G713 by 12°C. For pretty much the same configuration, including the RTX 3070 (130W).
