Laptops have little space to adequately cool powerful hardware. Asus probably wondered, "why don't we just open the case and let the hardware get a direct supply of fresh air?" No sooner said than done, but does this actually work? Does it deliver the promised advantages in terms of noise and temperature, and is it stable enough at the same time? We put this to the test.

Be in no doubt though that a 17-inch gaming laptop like this is inevitably going to be on the large and heavy side – this is a laptop that's best left where it is, although you can of course take it on the move with you too (it just might be a struggle to get it open on the train). In terms of design, it's restrained enough to appeal to a broad range of people, while still offering some nice flourishes (like the lighting and the tilted keyboard). It's hard to complain about the performance and power you get from the Asus ROG Zephyrus S17, even if we did notice some occasional issues (which a reboot sorted). Add in a great screen, lots of connectivity options, and a certain amount of flexibility in terms of configuration options, and we think it's one of the best gaming laptops around at the moment – provided you have enough in the bank to be able to afford it.

The Asus ROG Zephyrus S17 is one of the most powerful 17-inch gaming laptops you can buy. It excels in CPU and GPU performance and dishes up consistently smooth and detailed visuals in AAA games on its 4K display. The only real downside is the high price. That said, if you've got a flexible budget, the Zephyrus is well worth it.

The Asus ROG Zephyrus S17 does everything a powerful gaming laptop should do well. It's fast, has a responsive and clicky RGB keyboard, and will devour any game you throw at it. It's not quite perfect, but then no machine is. We long for the days where kicking a laptop into Turbo mode for supreme game performance doesn't mean loud fan noise. But, as it stands, that's just par for the course. Given the sheer power and screen quality here, the Zephyrus S17 is a stunning big-scale game machine from Asus - so long you can stomach its significant price tag as a result of that standout tilt-angle keyboard.

Once Asus get their QC in check and address the stuttering we noticed while playing games on the Advanced Optimus profile, this 2021 Zephyrus S17 GX703 is going to be an excellently-balanced 17-inch laptop and possibly the best option in its premium niche. Not the most powerful out there, but a very fine mix of build quality, portability, features, and performance across the board in everyday use, workloads, and games. Right now, though, I feel this is still a little unpolished, and in the review down below we'll get in-depth on why this is.

If you're going all out for an elite gaming laptop, it's almost impossible to go wrong with the new Zephyrus S17. Our sample's $3,299 is a lot of cheddar, but it's more or less the going rate for this level of hardware, and no other laptop we know off offers a tilted optical-mechanical keyboard plus a six-speaker sound system. Esports hounds might bemoan the lack of a high-refresh-rate 1080p display, but the 165Hz WQHD screen ought to thrill everyone else. Epic in every way, the ROG Zephyrus S17 is our new Editors' Choice pick for a deluxe big-screen gaming laptop.

The ASUS ROG Zephyrus S17, especially this model, is the most powerful offering in the company’s latest line of gaming laptops powered by Intel 11th-gen CPUs. The last ROG Zephyrus that blew us away was the Zephyrus Duo 15 with its secondary screen. In the case of the S17, the company makes that second attempt by equipping it with a keyboard with optical mechanical switches. This is good news if you’re a user that likes these kinds of switches. However, some users might not appreciate it, especially those already used to using their own mechanical keyboards. The multi-wheel, on the other hand, is more for convenience. Good to have, nonetheless.

I know, you’re pissed about the lack of an AMD option on this Zephyrus S17 model, but that’s just the way it is. I haven’t run detailed tests on this early sample, but from the little I did run, this Intel platform is no slouch, even if it’s not going to match the Ryzen 9s in terms of efficiency or capabilities in certain multi-threaded scenarios. General demanding loads and especially gaming, on the other hand, that’s where I’m pretty sure this will end up at least competitive.
