The Asus ROG Mothership convertible gaming laptop works on paper, but given the enormous price tag, it demands too many practical concessions. It's a cool concept PC, but we can recommend it only to those with buckets of cash to burn on a novelty.

The Mothership packs all the amazing hardware without compromising the cooling capabilities inside this package. Making it yet another choice for users who require a portable desktop replacement. All in all, comparing the Mothership spec-by-spec by the price will not get you anywhere. One has to know what are their requirements and appreciate the engineering feat the designers have pulled to make it possible. That goes without saying, you will definitely not disappointed if raw power is all you need for your computing needs.

It's sad that Asus isn't selling it commercially in India but I am happy to see that most of the technology on the Mothership could make it to regular ROG laptops in the coming years. And that for me as an enthusiastic gamer is a very great piece of news. Come on Asus, bring this laptop to more of your ROG series laptops for us power-hungry gamers.

You could argue that the 4K version of the ROG Mothership would be better suited to workstation duties, though there’s plenty of other options that are more suited to that task that are more corporate-looking.

Overall, for well-heeled gamers looking for a desktop replacement that can squeeze out just about every bit of performance possible and stay (and look) relatively cool doing it, the Mothership is the system for you.

That said, I don't think we should dismiss the Mothership altogether. ASUS clearly doesn't expect to move the Mothership in volume. Perhaps we should view it more as an exploration of what can be done with the traditional clamshell gaming laptop than as a misguided foray on the part of ASUS. And there may even be something in the idea – after all, if there was a 2-in-1 gaming convertible that was slim, light, and could work as a tablet, I'd be pretty interested to see it. Of course, I'm hoping it doesn't cost ten grand too.

But here's the real kicker. The laptop will cost a mind-boggling S$9,998, a stratospheric figure that excludes the vast majority of gamers. If you just won the lottery, you can buy the ROG Mothership in June, but it feels like ASUS made the device just because it could and not because it actually expects people to flock to it.

Overall, the ROG Mothership may not be for everyone, given its PHP 399,995 price tag. But if you’re a creator and a gamer and looking for a very powerful semi-portable gaming computer to invest in, then this is one of the machines we can recommend. It has the top-of-the-line graphics, but it is also paired with the latest processor and crazy-large RAM capacity.

Due to its particularly innovative products, Asus has often been the center of attention in the past. Now, with the ROG GZ700 and after the watercooled ROG GX700, comes one more unusual gaming laptop. The 17-inch device sets itself apart with a convertible design. However, the price leaves us speechless.
