The world’s most powerful mobile workstation has landed in the office (well, my home to be more accurate because #WFH) – the ASUS ProArt StudioBook One (W590). It takes that bragging right by virtue of its NVIDIA Quadro RTX 6000 GPU, which boast a whopping 24GB of GDDR6 memory, and is intended to help bridge the gap between powerful, but bulky, desktop workstations and laptops. It also cost an face-melting S$18,688. Clearly, this notebook isn’t for the likes of you and I. Rather, the ProArt StudioBook series are built to cater to very specific needs of graphics professionals, digital artists, animators, and more. To provide these creators with a portable system with workstation-class power, enabling them to take advantage of it wherever they go.

Well, even by looking at the price, I guess most of us would understand that this isn’t a machine meant for us. Heck, I didn’t even know how to fully test out such a system. With what I have, I can see that the ASUS ProArt StudioBook One is truly quite an interesting machine. But overall I think that this machine is probably more of a concept design than a laptop that ASUS and NVIDIA expects to fly off shelves.

Asus, the company that brought you the hinge with a lift, stands that idea on its head -- or really its lid -- for the ProArt StudioBook One. It's a high-ranking member of Asus' creator-focused laptop line, designed for professionals who need workstation graphics. The StudioBook One opens a gap behind the screen when you lift the lid, increasing the amount of cool air the fans can suck in from the bottom and sides without requiring big, unsightly vents.

The Asus ProArt StudioBook Pro X is obviously a laptop for professionals – Pro wouldn't be in the name of the device twice otherwise – but it's good to know that Asus appears to have taken the needs of creatives and professionals into consideration when designing this device.

For mobile workstations, performance is the top priority. Accordingly, Asus equips its ProArt StudioBook Pro X W730G5T with the Nvidia Quadro RTX 5000 but does without eight-core CPUs. This is a mistake, because the price is too high for the built-in CPU.

The ProArt StudioBook Pro X W730G5T is Asus's first attempt in the professional workstation notebook segment and nails most aspects, from the study compact built to the unique 16:10 wide-gamut display and the competent performance and thermals. It could still improve in some areas, and it's not going to be enough for Asus to make a solid product to get competitive in this niche, they also have to deliver on the QC and support expected at this level. Our rating is preliminary, as it's based on a pre-release test unit.

While it took Asus a while to have this product ready for sale, the StudioBook Pro W700 is mostly an excellent effort. It's compact and light for a 17-inch laptop, nicely crafted, packs a fast and quiet keyboard, excellent IO and a 16:10 wide-gamut screen you'll hardly find anywhere else at this moment. It also checks the right boxes in terms of performance, thermals, and acoustics, with few limitations, as explained in this article. Too bad Asus couldn't pack a larger battery, though, this aspect alone might be a deal-breaker for some of you.

I really enjoyed using the ProArt StudioBook 15 to edit photos, watch videos and browse the web. It has a fantastic 4K display, blistering-fast performance, and a stylish design. I'm also impressed by the specs you get for $1,999 -- a Core i7-9750H CPU, 32GB of RAM, 1TB of fast storage and a GeForce RTX 2060 GPU.
