Archive.org versionOverall, I’m very satisfied with my purchase. I knew from prior experience that laptop speakers are tiny and sad, so it was no surprise when they sounded poor. Performance is akin to my home-built desktop* when running most software, although the hard drive could be faster. Too bad the 7700 video card is the best NVIDIA video card available for laptops of this size.

Archive.org versionAfter about two hours of gaming, the G1 did get slightly warm but definitely not uncomfortable. ASUS also places good fans inside the unit that wont make you go deaf. While the bundled speakers dont compare to a good desktop set, they wont wake the neighbors up. Battery life is also reasonable on the G1 with our test unit lasting well over three hours which is pretty impressive. Overall, the G1 strikes a nice balance between a hard core gaming notebook and one you'd use everyday.

Archive.org versionThe Asus G1 is marketed as the 15” mobile answer for the hardcore gamer enthusiast. The G1 is a sharp looking package that meets the requirements of most of today’s best games and entertainment applications. The configuration for the machine reviewed follows below. Archive.org versionFor all but the most hardcore gamer, the G1 provides an appealing mix of portability and performance at a reasonable price. If you're one of the many mobile gamers who balks at paying an exorbitant price for a backbreaking rig destined for obsolescence, Asus has a proposition. The G1, part of the company's new gaming line, is a solidly built machine tuned for gaming, with parts slightly below top-of-the-line, and attractively priced at well under $2,000. This isn't a machine for the hardcore, but most gamers will find that price and portability can be as appealing as frame rates.

Archive.org versionLaptop-loving gamers are often stuck with portable systems that are nearly as bulky as the desktop computers they so studiously avoid. Recently, Asus has scored with interesting design ideas such as the leather-bound ultraportable S6F, and the company's industrial-flavored G1 is also something you don't see every day: a midsize laptop marketed as a gaming system. While high-end 17-inch gaming rigs from Dell and Alienware can easily set you back more than $3,000, the Asus G1 gives you a decent set of specs--a couple of steps down from the top-of-the-line--squeezed into a 15.4-inch form factor for a reasonable $1,799. Too bad the gaming scores weren't up to snuff. If you need more video-card muscle, or if the black-and-green design doesn't appeal to your sensibilities, a few hundred dollars more will get you a better 3D chip and larger display in Toshiba's Satellite P105-S9722.

Archive.org versionThe ASUS G1 is one of two notebooks Asus recently introduced targeted for the gaming community. Based on the latest Intel Core 2 Duo Mobile Technology the ASUS G1 provides graphic solutions from nVidia with the 7700 512MB graphics card. Overall this a good laptop that is unique and has numerous features & accessories at a good price. The performance is great, and I would consider this to be a good portable gaming computer.

NVIDIA GeForce Go 7300: The NVIDIA GeForce Go 7300 is part of the lower performance segment and the competitor card of the ATI X1300. Technically it is simply lower clocked GeForce Go 7300.
Only some 3D games with very low demands are playable with these cards.

Intel Core Duo: Double Core processor with a very good relation of performance to current consumption. The 2 MB L2 Cache are used together by the double. The maximum capacity of 31 watts is only 4 watts more than with the Pentium M (predecessor). Both cores are lowered automatically and independently of each other by speed steps down to 1 GHz. In addition it now supports also SSE3 instructions. At least it is just as fast as a equivalent Pentium M. With applications, which were designed for multi-processors, the performance can be nearly twice as fast as with the Pentium M (e.g. CineBench around 86% fast)
