Ion meets Eee. As far as netbooks are concerned, Asus has always taken pride in its pioneer role in the various fields. Asus has, however, surprisingly allowed itself plenty of time as to the topic of Ion, so a powerful GeForce 9400M graphic card combined with an Intel Atom CPU, as there are already comparable competitor models on the market. But Asus wouldn't be Asus if there wasn't the one or other feature slumbering in the case.

Ultra-portable or ULV laptops turn out to be expensive because of their hardware, especially the processor. On the other hand, when you find a netbook which performs as well as an ultra-portable laptop, with almost the same form factor, at a much lower price, it's very hard to resist. We'd say that at Rs 29,000, it's a good pick! But again, this does not apply to someone who's looking for a laptop , where, you'd obviously look for performance as opposed to portability. But if you're looking for a good balance of both, this one offers good value for money.

At $500, the 1201N hits the upper end of the netbook range. But that buys you Ion graphics, dual-core processing power, 2GB of RAM, a real version of Windows 7, and a screen that can display 720p video. Next-gen Ion systems will have better battery life, but will they be dual-core? Weve gotta give Asus credit for releasing a 12-inch netbook with moxie and proving that Atom isnt dead yet.

At a price of Rs. 21,490, this product commands a premium in price compared to regular netbooks, but it adds a whole new dimension in watching movies, something that a netbook user would love to do on the move, as, let’s face it, all work and no play makes.. you get the drill. Also battery is not the strongest - and CPU performance is just average, so we cannot give it flying colors, but the larger screen and decent ergonomics are tugging at our judgment from the positive end.

At first glance, the Asus Eee PC 1201n physically resembles more conventional thin-and-light laptops based on low-voltage (CULV) mainstream CPUs. In the end, there's a lot to like with the Asus Eee PC 1201n. The better keyboard and larger display in a package that's still thin and sleek are attractive, but we'd really like to see the price drop by about £80.

Would you spend almost $500 for a netbook--even a top-of-the-line one, like the Asus Eee PC 1201n? All in all, ION makes the Eee 1201N feel and perform more like a real PC, instead of a crippled netbook. Having HD content playback properly without stuttering or visual artifacts is well worth it. The gaming aspect is a bonus since many older games (circa 2008 or earlier) and newer titles like Torchlight are cheap and can be found for less than $20.

The most powerful mini-laptop you can buy, but does it qualify as a netbook? Since Asus kickstarted the modern netbook market, it is only apt that it has now released one of the world's first dual-core mini-laptops. While the 1201N fails to redefine the netbook market as dramatically as we would have hoped, it is the most powerful mini-laptop we've seen to date. With its large screen and dual-core power, however, we question whether it really qualifies as a netbook in the first place.

The Asus Eee PC 1201N is the first notebook with an Atom processor and NVIDIA ION graphics that I’ve tested that doesn’t feel slower than a typical 10 inch Atom powered netbook at day to day tasks. Sure, the HP Mini 311 and other ION-powered systems can play modern video games and stream HD video. But they’re kind of sluggish for web browsing. That’s not true with the Asus Eee PC 1201N, which is likely due to the dual core Atom 330 CPU.

Nvidia's ION platform, which promises 1080p video playback and light 3D gaming, is finally showing signs of life. First, HP launched with its Mini 311 and then Lenovo and Samsung followed with their own Ion netbooks. Hot on their heels is ASUS, with yet another Ion netbook. The ASUS EeePC 1201N is the fastest netbook money can buy, but its tradeoff is battery life just 4 hours of it.

Two trends are sweeping the netbook world of late: new Intel Atom processors, and the spread of the Nvidia Ion GPU, which finally gives tiny Atom-powered laptops some graphics muscle. Although the Asus Eee PC 1201N Seashell doesn't utilise the new 'Pine Trail' Atom N450 processor, it has a rarely used dual-core Atom at its heart instead. As one of the few netbooks with a dual-core Atom processor and Nvidia Ion graphics, the 12.1-inch Asus Eee PC 1201N Seashell offers superior performance compared with most Atom-based machines. Any higher-level ultra-low-voltage thin-and-light laptop will still do better, though.

Multimedia takes centre-stage on Asus' new Eee PC 1201N netbook. Although it might look just like the brand's other netbooks from the outside, there's some rather unusual hardware on the inside. The combination of a dual-core Intel Atom processor and Nvidia's ION graphics chipset gives the 1201N a real boost. The Asus Eee PC 1201N performs well and introduces some faster components. Almost an ultra-portable PC rather than a netbook, we would have been happier with less use of glossy materials and a better processor (a CULV for instance). Still, it's limited to users who don't need the best possible portability and battery life.

When you're dealing with laptops and netbooks, there's a lot more subjective opinion on the matter than if you're going out and purchasing the latest video card. If you're doing the latter, performance and price are pretty much the major metrics. With a laptop, you need to balance battery life, features, size and weight, design, and other aspects - along with price and performance. That means that one person might love a certain laptop while a bunch of others hate it, or vice versa.

At $500 USD the ASUS 1201N-PU17-BK is actually not a bad deal in comparison to other ION-equipped netbooks. Availability on this netbook is quite limited but there should be greater supplies at the various Internet retailers beginning in January. Amazon's product page expects the ASUS Eee PC 1201N to be available beginning on the 15th of January, but they are accepting pre-orders.

The ASUS Eee PC 1201N is, without a doubt, the fastest netbook we’ve ever tested. It also has a good keyboard, attractive design, and strong multimedia performance. The Ion-powered HP Mini 311 doesn’t have the overall muscle of the 1201N, but offers an additional hour of endurance and bests the Eee PC on CUDA-accelerated transcoding and wireless tests. And, if graphics performance isn’t that important to you at all, you might want to consider an 11.6-inch ultraportable notebook like the Acer Aspire 1410, which lasted 2 hours and 40 minutes longer.

Overall, HotHardware were very impressed and gave the 1201N an Editor’s Choice award. They say it is worth the investment over lower-specced models and is the model to get this Christmas. They also say that it strikes a “perfect balance of speed, battery life and size.” Combine this with top-notch build quality and you have a netbook that is likely to be a big hit for Asus.

We suspect the Eee PC 1201N could be one of the more highly anticipated netbooks given that the Ion-based IdeaPad S12 was delayed to the point where the buzz had died down. A dual-core CPU paired with an Ion GPU is a recipe for success, and this is easily the most potent netbook we've seen to date. You get a roomy 12.1" display, full-size keyboard, 6-cell battery (that can last 3.5 hours even under pressure), an Ion GPU and a dual-core CPU for under $500.

The Eee PC 1201HA is priced at Rs. 24,000 plus tax. Of the previous two models we tested, the NVIDIA ION based 1201NL sells for just Rs. 2,000 more. A typical 10-inch netbook with a slightly faster processor sells in the range of Rs. 15,000 to Rs. 18,000. So, that's an extra six grand that you'll pay at least for the 1201HA, to get two more inches of screen size, and slightly better ergonomics. If you look at it this way, the 1201HA's price does feel a little on the higher side.

The Asus Eee PC 1201HA sells for £349 inc VAT. And the choice you have to make couldn't be more simpler: if you desire good looks, modest performance, and amazing battery life, you should buy the Eee PC 1101HA. But if you desire greater RAM and storage space and the latest Windows 7 operating system on your netbook, go for the Asus Eee PC 1201HA.

AMDeee. The 1201T is Asus's first Eee PC with AMD hardware; it provides an interesting alternative to the Eee PC 1201N which has the latest Intel components. Find out how the AMD Athlon Neo MV-40 processor and the ATI graphics measure up in our review.

The Eee PC 1201T sells for just about Rs. 21,500 (excluding taxes) but beware of the fact that it comes with no OS on-board. So you'll have to shell out more if you want to install Windows on it later. It is the first model we've tested that has broken netbook barriers in some respects. Overall, the 1201T is a good option for people who are interested in HD playback. But we really missed an HDMI port on it and we're sure many will feel the same. Also, if you're looking for a netbook with a five-hour plus battery life, then the 1201T is not for you. However, if you're looking for a big-screened netbook to watch HD movies along with internet and office productivity, then the 1201T is a decent and cheap option. Let's hope the Eee PC 1201PNL (with an Intel Atom-NVIDIA ION combination) gives us what's missing from this netbook.

The recently launched Asus Eee PC 1201T is a 12-inch netbook based on AMD's Athlon Neo MV-40 1.6GHz processor. The Asus Eee PC 1201T is a great performing 12-inch netbook. The Eee PC 1201T has a nice keyboard, good textured touchpad, and a pretty good screen. Its battery life may not be as impressive as some other netbooks in our Top 5, but buy the Eee PC 1201T if you need a better performing netbook with a large hard drive, screen and keyboard.

The Eee PC 1201NL is priced around Rs. 25,990 (excluding taxes). This is a pre release product and is not available in India right now, but is expected to come by next month. Conversely, you can buy an Eee PC 1201T right now for Rs. 21,500. That's a saving of Rs. 4,500 straight away. Both are 12-inch netbooks that can play HD.

A lighter version of the 1201N, the Asus Eee PC 1201NL is a slim, nicely designed netbook with an NVIDIA ION chipset. Compact and light in spite of its 12.1 inch screen, the Eee PC 1201 gives good multimedia performance and is a stylish looking machine. The ION chipset means it can handle video no problem. The Atom and 1 GB of RAM do unfortunately impose certain limitations however, holding back the chipset a good deal.

High DefinitION. The first version of Ion already aimed at improving the performance of netbooks and enhancing their field of application. As Nvidia could no longer offer a chipset that supports the Pineview Intel Atom CPUs, the next generation of the ION platform comes with a dedicated graphics card.

Here's the real kicker: Asus probably should have held on releasing the 1201PN until Optimus was ready for the Ion 2 platform. Had Optimus come on this machine, we can imagine things turning out a lot better for the 1201PN. If we could switch off the discrete GPU and use the IGP when needed, we suspect battery life figures would've been far better. And what's a little bothersome, aside from the lack of Optimus.

Unveiled as the first Atom Netbook featuring a next-gen Nvidia Ion processor, the $499 Asus Eee PC 1201PN is an update to the very similarly named Asus Eee PC 1201N we reviewed at the beginning of 2010. As the first next-gen Nvidia Ion Netbook, the Asus Eee PC 1201PN is a bit of a misnomer--offering single-core Atom performance and no automatic graphics switching in an expensive package that underperforms its predecessor.

The Asus EeePC 1201PN is a little costlier than your average netbook, because you're paying a premium for more system memory and an Nvidia Ion chipset. Although graphics and battery scores improve, processor speed takes a hit with the new single-core Atom N450. Overall, the 1201PN is a very good 12-inch, oversized netbook, but I rather you wait for the dual-core version or go with the Lenovo IdeaPad S12. If you don't need the graphics horsepower or a bigger screen, go with a smaller netbook like the Editors' Choice Toshiba mini NB305-N410 or HP Mini 5102. You'll save some money, too.

Asus and Nvidia deserve credit for improving on on the best 12-inch multimedia netbook. For $499, the Eee PC 1201PN offers longer battery life and better graphics performance than its predecessor. However, this system's CPU often feels like a bottleneck compared to the 1201N's dual-core CPU, as we often had to wait for that Windows 7 circle to stop spinning. We also want Asus to banish its stiff touch button in favor of something more comfortable. Overall, the 1201PN is a good value, but some may prefer the $599 ThinkPad X100e, which offers better ergonomics, more processing power, and slightly longer battery life (though higher temps and no HDMI). The Acer Aspire Timeline 1810TZ offers even better endurance, but weak graphics. Still, if you're on a budget, this Eee PC is a good bet. Or wait until September, when Asus will offer a mobile dual-core version of this machine paired with Nvidia's Optimus technology (which automatically switches between integrated and discrete graphics).

After much buzz, the first major update to Nvidia’s Ion graphics chipset is finally here. Nvidia calls it, prosaically, "Next-Generation Ion" (we'll term it "Ion 2" for short), and we got to test-drive it inside an Asus Eee PC 1201pn, a 12.1-inch netbook built around an Intel Atom N450 (Pine Trail) CPU. Equipped with Nvidia’s next-gen graphics and an Intel Pine Trail processor, this netbook offers excellent media playback and a roomy screen.

Asus: ASUSTeK Computer Inc. is a major Taiwanese computer hardware manufacturer based in Taipei, founded in 1989. Under the Asus brand name, the company manufactures a wide range of products, including laptops, desktops, motherboards, graphics cards, monitors, smartphones and networking equipment, complete systems and PC components for end users.
Under the ROG (Republic of Gamers) brand name, ASUS manufactures gaming laptops known by gamers for their powerful specifications, dedicated graphics cards, high refresh rate displays and advanced cooling systems.
Beyond gaming, a wide range of notebooks are offered for different needs and budgets, from ultra-slim and lightweight ultrabooks to versatile 2-in-1 convertibles and budget-friendly options. In 2023, Asus had a 7% global market share of the PC market.
Customer satisfaction with ASUS notebooks concerns performance, the features, and the good price-performance ratio of ASUS notebooks. However, as with any brand, there are occasional reports of problems such as overheating, driver compatibility, or build quality issues.
Only some 3D games with very low demands are playable with these cards.
NVIDIA GeForce 9400M (G) / ION (LE): Integrated (shared Memory) graphics adapter. Built in in current MacBook, MacBook Pro, and MacBook Air laptops and also used in the ION (LE) platform for netbooks. Also called GeForce 9400M G. Fastest available motherboard GPU (in 2009). Integrated PureVideo HD (VP3) video processor to decode HD videos with the GPU.
ATI Radeon HD 3200: Onboard (shared Memory) graphics chip (on RS780M chipset) based on the HD 2400 graphics core. It also features the UVD video engine to decode HD videos. Beware: Under Windows XP the HD 3200 may have no 2D accelleration because of a driver problem.
NVIDIA ION 2: ION2 is a GT218 graphics chip for Pinetrail Atom systems (D510, D410, N450) with 8 or 16 shader cores depending on the platform (10", 12", desktop). Compared to ION 1, ION 2 is a dedicated graphics card (connected only by a PCIe 1x due to the Pinetrail limitations) based on the GeForce 305M / 310M. Supports PureVideo HD to decode HD videos.
These graphics cards are not suited for Windows 3D games. Office and Internet surfing however is possible.
Intel Graphics Media Accelerator (GMA) 500: Integrated (onboard) graphics chip on the UL11L, US15L, and US15W chipsets with a licensed PowerVR SGX core. DirectX 10.1 support but because of low clock rates (100-200 MHz UL11L - US15) and only 4 shaders not suited for 3D games. The integrated video decoder accelerates the playback of HD videos (MPEG2, VC-1, AVC).
Intel Graphics Media Accelerator (GMA) 950: Intel Graphics Media Accelerator 950 is an integrated (onboard) graphic chip on Mobile Intel 945GM chipset. It is a faster clocked version of the GMA 900 and supports no hardware T&L (Transform & Lightning) accelleration (which is required for some games).
» Further information can be found in our Comparison of Mobile Graphics Cards and the corresponding Benchmark List.
Intel Atom: The Intel Atom series is a 64-Bit (not every model supports 64bit) microprocessor for cheap and small notebooks (so called netbooks), MIDs, or UMPCs. The speciality of the new architecture is the "in order" execution (instead of the usual and faster "out of order" execution). Therefore, the transistor count of the Atom series is much lower and, thus, cheaper to produce. Furthermore, the power consumption is very low. The performance per Megahertz is therfore worse than the old Pentium 3M (1,2 GHz on par with a 1.6 GHz Atom).
330:
Dual Core desktop Atom CPU without most of the power saving features (only C1 state, no Speedstep for example). The performance is still only suited for less demanding tasks.
Z520:
Power efficient single core CPU with a very low performance. Offers more features (power saving, VT-x) than the N series Atoms.
N270:
Power efficient, cheap and slow Netbook single core CPU. Because of the in-order execution, the performance per MHz is worse than Core Solo or Celeron M processors.
N450:
Intel Atom CPU for Netbooks with integrated memory controller and GMA 3150 GPU. The performance of the system should be only minimally faster than the previous Atom N280 / GMA 950 combination.
AMD Athlon Neo:
MV-40: Slow single core processor for small and thin laptops. A bit faster than Atom based systems but the power consumption is also higher.

78.42%: This rating is not earth-shattering. This rating must actually be seen as average, since there are about as many devices with worse ratings as better ones. A purchase recommendation can only be seen with a lot of goodwill, unless it is about websites that generally rate strictly.
