Apple reportedly closing the Company Store at its former headquarters after 30 years
At the former Apple headquarters, the former 'Company Store' will soon be shutting up for good, Macrumors has learned. On January 20, 2024, this particular Apple Store, located at One Infinite Loop in Cupertino, will close. The store is comparatively small, but has been in existence for around 30 years. The closure has not yet been announced on the store's official website.
Since the relocation of the headquarters to the nearby Apple Park, the location has lost some of its significance, even though the store, which also sells merchandise, was initially modernized. But it does not offer the full range of products due to the smaller space. The Genius Bar, for example, is limited. Then again, these are also available at the Apple Park Visitor Center at the new headquarters.
The Company Store is a predecessor to Apple's retail store, which first opened in 2001. Before that, Apple relied primarily on local retailers and, above all, specialist retailers. In the decades that followed, Apple Stores grew massively in significance, despite ever-increasing online retail. Even today, Apple Stores are well-frequented stores.
The concept was so successful that Microsoft also tried it out. However, after a decade of expansion, the Microsoft Stores finally became history in mid-2020. Some of the stores were converted into Experience Centers and are thus no longer part of the retail sector. According to Microsoft, you can still buy products there. There are centers in London, New York and Sydney.
