Apple has finally released new OS updates for the iPhone, iPad, Mac and Apple Watch following almost two months of beta testing. iOS 15.6, iPadOS 15.6, macOS 12.5 and watchOS 8.7 are all available to download now and mainly focus on fixing bugs that existed in older builds.

Apple has released iOS 15.6 and iPadOS 15.6 globally for iPhones and iPads, respectively. Having been in beta for a while, the updates only fix several bugs, rather than adding new features. Presumably, Apple will save any new features for iOS 16, which should be available this autumn outside of Apple's developer program. For example, the pair address an issue where System Preferences displayed an erroneous warning that a device's storage is full. Additionally, Safari no longer opens a web page from your browsing history for no apparent reason, while Braille devices should always run at full speed. The release notes for the pair are as follows:

  • iOS 15.6 includes enhancements, bug fixes and security updates.
  • TV app adds the option to restart a live sports game already in-progress and pause, rewind, or fast-forward
  • Fixes an issue where Settings may continue to display that device storage is full even if it is available
  • Fixes an issue that may cause braille devices to slow down or stop responding when navigating text in Mail
  • Fixes an issue in Safari where a tab may revert back to a previous page
  • Some features may not be available for all regions or on all Apple devices. For information on the security content of Apple software updates, please visit this website: https://support.apple.com/kb/HT201222

For reference, iOS 15.6 and iPadOS 15.6 are approximately 0.5 GB downloads. In comparison, watchOS 8.7 is smaller at approximately 180 MB. Unsurprisingly, watchOS 8.7 also contains bug and security fixes. Please note that your Apple Watch must be charging with at least 50% battery remaining before it will start downloading watchOS 8.7.

Meanwhile, Apple has introduced macOS Monterey 12.5, a 2.2 GB download. According to Apple, the update only makes minor changes to macOS Monterey, such as resolving a problem that caused Safari to revert to a previous page, the same issue that iOS 15.6 and iPadOS 15.6 fixed. The full changelog for macOS Monterey 12.5 is listed below. All updates are available to download now as over-the-air (OTA) updates.

  • macOS Monterey 12.5 includes enhancements, bug fixes and security updates.
  • TV app adds the option to restart a live sports game already in-progress and pause, rewind, or fast-forward
  • Fixes an issue in Safari where a tab may revert back to a previous page
  • Some features may not be available for all regions, or on all Apple devices.
