Even old Apple iPods can now be upgraded with the latest Bluetooth standards, as iFi Up Travel Max simply connects to a music player, a car stereo or an in-flight entertainment system via a 3.5 mm plug, and then streams hi-fi music to up to two pairs of headphones.

Anyone looking to add Bluetooth to an old music player, a turntable with an integrated preamp or even a car now has a new option: the iFi Up Travel Max. The small dongle features a fold-out 3.5 mm plug, allowing it to connect easily to numerous devices, from a Sony Walkman from the 1980s to an airplane's entertainment system.

Audio is then automatically streamed to headphones and speakers paired with the dongle. The gadget supports both transmitter and receiver modes, so it can also be used to stream music from a smartphone to a car's speakers. Compared to the older iFi Up Travel, the new Up Travel Max primarily promises better sound. That's because the dongle now supports Qualcomm aptX Lossless, allowing it to transmit CD-quality music without lossy compression.

When two headphones are connected simultaneously, music can now be streamed using Qualcomm aptX Adaptive instead of just the heavily compressed SBC codec. Support for Bluetooth Auracast is also new. Thanks to an integrated microphone, the dongle can also be used as a hands-free device for phone calls. iFi Up Travel Max promises a battery life of ten hours and can be charged via USB-C.

Pricing and availability

iFi Up Travel Max is now available to preorder for $129 from the manufacturer's online store with shipping starting on November 20. Those who do not need aptX Lossless and Auracast can find the older iFi Up Travel for $99 on Amazon.
