The M5 iPad Pro is hands-down the best tablet to ever come out of Cupertino. I highly recommend it if you’re getting work done on an aging M1 model or something even more antique. Apple’s newest runs blazing fast, and the OLED screen looks fantastic in every lighting condition. And don’t forget about quicker file transfers over USB-C and speedier Wi-Fi. I’ll use mine for years to do my job, while continuing to roll my eyes when people try to tell me that a Mac is absolutely required to be productive.

The M5 iPad Pro is nice in the sense that “getting a little more for your money today than you could get for the same money two weeks ago” is nice. But it changes essentially nothing for potential iPad buyers. I’m hard-pressed to think of anyone who would be well-served by the M5 iPad Pro who wouldn’t have been equally well-served by the M4 version. And if the M4 iPad Pro was already overkill for you, the M5 is just a little more so, particularly if you have an M1 or M2. People with an A12X or A12Z version of the iPad Pro from 2018 or 2020 will benefit more, particularly if you’re multitasking a lot or running into limitations or RAM complaints from the apps you’re using. But even with the iPadOS 26 update, it still seems like the capabilities of the iPad’s software lags behind the capabilities of the hardware by a few years.

iPads are the best tablets, and most people will be best served by a cheaper iPad. Lots of what I like about the iPad Pro can be done at lower price levels too. Add a keyboard case to the iPad Air or even the entry level iPad, and you can do multitasking windows and work with Pencils too. The fast speed, extra-vivid display, and thinner size of the Pro makes the experience feel more premium. But are they worth the high price at the Pro end, and can they truly flex to become computers for everything else? The answer to that is increasingly yes, but not quite. The iPad is full of excellent creative apps, but still feels like it's missing some of the pro Mac tools for video editing and graphics that could easily be there now. Or, make Mac and iPadOS apps for pros be truly interchangeable now.

In the past, this was the part of the review where I praised the iPad Pro’s hardware and then pointed out that iPadOS holds it back in some ways. Happily, iPadOS 26 changes that. There’s certainly room for improvement, but it unquestionably enhances the iPad Pro’s utility and user experience, and makes it a more useful device. For longtime iPad users who can use all of the firepower that the M5 chip can deliver, the choice is clear. The iPad Pro is the one to have. Its excellent performance, display, and slender form factor will surely delight its owners. The only caveat is that all of this tablet excellence comes at a high price. Prices start at S$1,499 for the 11-inch model and S$1,999 for the 13-inch model. Once you start adding storage and accessories, the price starts to balloon quick.

There are hardly any tablets in this display size range anymore. For subnotebooks, on the other hand, it is the standard format.
The advantage of subnotebooks is that the entire laptop can be small and therefore easily portable. The smaller display also has the advantage of requiring less power, which further improves battery life and thus mobility. The disadvantage is that reading texts is more strenuous on the eyes. High resolutions are more likely to be found in standard laptops.
