According to a report by the venerable Wall Street Journal which was later reiterated by Bloomberg, Apple is reportedly considering a multi-billion dollar investment in the AI-behemoth OpenAI. Moreover, Nvidia is also discussing the possibility of participating in the next funding round, which is expected to position OpenAI's value at well over the $100 billion mark.
OpenAI has indisputably been the leader of the pack when it comes to the democratization of AI tools. With the introduction of ChatGPT in late 2022, the AI giant became a household name which soon sparked a renewed interest in AI.
At the last WWDC, Apple introduced a plethora of new AI features dubbed Apple Intelligence which included an overhauled Siri. A ChatGPT integration was also introduced, enabling the more sophisticated GPT-4o model to handle requests that are beyond Siri’s abilities. There were also plans for Apple Fellow Phil Schiller to join OpenAI's board, though this move was ultimately deferred.
Nvidia on the other hand is OpenAI's primary supplier for the hardware that powers its AI products, so the company's interest in joining the latest funding rounds is not particularly surprising. Microsoft has poured over $13 billion into OpenAI since 2019 and continues to stand as a key backer. The conceivable involvement of Apple and Nvidia alongside Microsoft in OpenAI's list of backers illustrates the potential that these tech giants expect to witness in the future of OpenAI.
Apple Intelligence will be available on all Macs with M1 and higher, including the 13-inch MacBook Air (currently $899 on Amazon)
