Reviews for the Aorus 15G XC
Gigabyte's Aorus 15G has been updated with the new graphics unit RTX 3070. Unfortunately, the manufacturer seems to have made some cuts as a result of this upgrade, as several features from last year's model are no longer included. Can the new graphics performance outweigh these omissions or might the predecessor actually be the better choice?

The Aorus serves up impressive gaming speed and a good 1080p display alongside great thermal performance and a smart chassis. However, it does suffer from an patchy 1/0 option, an underwhelming keyboard and a higher price than similarly specified rivals. Indeed, it’s not tricky to find RTX 3070 laptops for less money, and sometimes with better AMD CPUs. That said, that price gets you a decent screen, solid build quality and low-noise operation. It could be cheaper, but it’s a well-built laptop if you can afford it.

This is a fantastic machine if all you want to do is get 60 frames per second (and often, better than that) in most of your games without tweaking many settings. Doing that for under $2,000 is an achievement worthy of praise. But if you care less about mobility and having a thin form factor that Gigabyte’s Aorus 15G provides, MSI’s GP66 Leopard takes the RTX 3070 even further. Its thicker, heavier chassis affords the chip even more headroom to get better performance in games — for the same $1,799 price, no less.

I would have preferred a configuration with 16GB RAM and 1TB storage over this, but I guess GIGABYTE thinks that people appreciate more RAM over storage. With that said, you can always drop in another M.2 SSD into the GIGABYTE AORUS 15G XC to upgrade the storage, versus having to dispose of two sticks of memory because you had to upgrade the memory..

Yes, the Gigabyte Aorus 15G is powerful thanks to its brand-spankin’ new GPU, and the fact that it’s super portable and has a colorful 240Hz panel is appealing. However, a super-powerful GPU alone does not make a gaming laptop good. This machine falls short on battery life, as well as its display, webcam, keyboard, speakers and even its heating solution.

The Aorus 15G gets some added RTX 30 series power and we've been very impressed by what the laptop has to offer – if you want a gaming laptop with top-level performance this year, then this is an option that we'd recommend putting somewhere on your shortlist.

15-inch display variants are the standard and are used for more than half of all laptops.
The reason for the popularity of mid-sized displays is that this size is reasonably easy on the eyes, often allows high resolutions and thus offers rich details on the screen, yet does not consume too much power and the devices can still be reasonably compact - simply the standard compromise.
