As a system engineered to deliver on the concept of a portable gaming laptop, the Alienware x14 R2 impresses. It looks and feels high in quality, it's supremely portable with long battery life, and it has enough power for some high-end, sharper-resolution gaming. You'll certainly see that a premium was put upon the product to achieve the small size, but that’s true for all 14-inch gaming machines. Just as crucially, the starting price is reasonable—way lower than some—with alternative configuration options to better fit your budget. The Razer Blade 14 definitively delivers more high-end graphics power in its RTX 4070 configuration versus this RTX 4060 recipe, but you have to pay up and then some for the even more luxurious build. In the end, we’d also question whether the 14-inch category is really all about power.

Dell has managed to carve out an interesting niche for the Alienware x14 R2 by existing during a time when compact, yet powerful gaming laptops are far and few in between. Although it may face some fierce competition soon as Lenovo recently announced its 14-inch Legion Slim 5 gaming laptop. Spoiler alert: it also runs an RTX 4060. If you don't mind paying a little extra for performance, Alienware x14R2 is a good choice. Everything that made the original beloved by users, from the paper-thin form factor to multiple ports, is present. Although I wouldn't blame you if you wanted to wait for a price drop.

The Alienware x14 R2 achieves the impossible. It’s a remarkably thin laptop that never feels like it sacrifices build quality or power in the process. And, even with a price hike compared to the previous generation, it still arrives $500 cheaper than Razer’s Blade 14 while offering a thinner build and similar build quality. That doesn’t mean the laptop is free of compromises, though. The port selection is weak, the trackpad is too thin, and although the screen is good for gaming, it doesn’t do much to stand out. Still, the pros definitely way out the cons here. I hoped for less of an iterative update from Alienware, but the x14 R2 has enough goodness to make it an easy recommendation.

14.00:
14 inch display size represents a middle ground between the small subnotebook formats and the screens of the standard 15 inch laptops.
The reason for the popularity of mid-sized displays is that this size is reasonably easy on the eyes, provides good resolutions with usable detail sizes, yet does not consume too much power and the devices can still be reasonably compact.
In the past, 14-inch devices were very rare, but now they are the standard for laptops after the 15-inchers.
