The 5.5-inch Alcatel Idol 3 was quite well received when it launched earlier this year, as it packed both decent specs and reasonable price, allowing it to compete with Asus ZenFone 2 and Motorola Moto G. Now, Alcatel decided to launch a smaller, 4.7-inch version of the smartphone for the US and Canadian markets.
Unfortunately, the smaller and cheaper Alcatel Idol 3 4.7 does not carry the same specifications as its older and bigger sibling. First of all, the screen’s resolution is 720p, as opposed to 1080p in the 5.5-inch version. Secondly, it’s powered by Snapdragon 410 with 1.5 GB of RAM, while Idol 3 5.5 featured Snapdragon 615 and 2 GB of RAM. Also the battery capacity of 2000 mAh is significantly smaller than in the older model (2910 mAh).
Other specs include 16 gigabytes of on-board storage (partly used by the OS and applications), expandable via micro-SD card slot, a 13 MP main camera and 5 MP front camera. The new handset runs Android 5.0 Lollipop out-of-the-box.
Alcatel Idol 3 4.7 will work on AT&T and T-Mobile’s networks (and compatible MVNOs) in the US and most carriers in Canada. The phone will be available from August 14th at a price of $179.99.
