New year, new notebook maker. We could not find any relevant information on the origin of the new TACHYS brand, but at least the company has an official “work in progress” site featuring its first laptop models that will apparently be launched next week at CES 2021. As with most new notebook makers, TACHYS seems to be utilizing device designs from Taiwanese ODM Clevo, which are among the best when it comes to price/performance ratios, and the new TACHYS VORTEX 15 laptops do not disappoint in this regard.
For only $1,099.99, the VORTEX 15 models pack some powerful specs, including the upcoming Zen3-based AMD Ryzen 7 5800H mobile APU coupled with 16 GB of DDR4 RAM and 1 TB of NVMe PCIe 3.0 SSD storage, plus the Max-P version of the unannounced GeForce RTX 3060 mobile GPU. The 15.6-inch display appears to be a quality one as it is rated for 72% NTSC color gamut and also gets 144 Hz refresh rate. However, the resolution is limited to 1080p, which might not really be a downside considering that the laptop is not equipped with a high-end GPU. The video presentation on the TACHYS site also reveals a fairly compact chassis, dual-tone backlit keyboard, up to 12 h battery life, and connectors like 3x USB-A and 1x USB-C with charging function, HDMI video out and audio jacks.
Expect to see similar builds and prices from other brands at CES 2021 this year. We are also looking forward to hearing more about premium AMD laptops with high-end mobile GPUs and the new 1440p screens.
