The Acer Predator Helios Neo 18 is the most affordable 18-inch laptop available with 2024-level specs, and although some corners were cut in order to keep costs low, Acer didn't sacrifice functionality or ergonomics on this series. They also implemented good inputs, plenty of ports, and a beautiful IPS display, as well as made sure this laptop offers plenty of performance and alright cooling for a mid-tier hardware configuration.

If you need a big-screen laptop but don’t want to spend too much money on it, the Acer Predator Helios Neo 18 (PHN18-71) is one of the few possible solutions on the market. Compared to the Acer Predator Helios 18 (PH18-72), not much has been cut down here in terms of hardware and functions. The cooling is almost the same (the two metal plates are slightly smaller and the CPU fan is plastic), the design is almost identical, the input devices are great, and the chassis rigidity is good. The lower price of the PHN18-71 is achieved thanks to the CPU and GPU options. You can get a device with a 55W 14th Gen Core i5 or Core i7 CPU if you don’t need so much processing power and the top graphics card is the 140W GeForce RTX 4070.

Those looking for a desktop replacement have a great option with the Acer Helios 18 and a surprisingly affordable one at that. The starting price is less than $2,000 and it comes with top-notch specs and display, great port selection, a keyboard with the WASD keys featuring MagKey 3.0, and more. Its design takes advantage of RGB lighting to give it an even more unique and lovely aesthetic.

Acer hasn’t revealed which countries will be getting which specs, or exactly what they’ll cost; I only know Europe will be first in line in February, with prices starting from €2199. The US will follow in March, from $1550. That gulf in price suggests North America will be getting a lower entry-level model, while Europeans will start with faster internals. Either way, it’ll be a tough sell compared to discounted 2023 models with the same graphics cards.

I love me a gorgeous display, and while the Acer Predator Helios Neo 18 doesn’t satisfy all of my needs, a whopping 18-inch screen offered at such an affordable price relative to its gaudy competitors is an impressive feat. Top that off with powerful performance and a comfortable keyboard; you’ve got the makings of a great gaming laptop. However, if you like what you see and you’re willing to go down a couple of inches, I highly recommend the Helios Neo 16. It may be nearly identical, but that gap in display color can make all the difference when playing video games. Despite that, the Predator Helios Neo 18 is a killer entry in Acer’s portfolio of big, bad motherlaptops.

Acer’s Predator Helios Neo 18 shows the benefits of a big-screen laptop that can be delivered at a slim price tag. Though sold for just $1,499.99, the Neo 18 provides excellent performance, a huge display, lots of connectivity, and an attractive design. A lack of portability is the true price paid for the Neo 18’s perks, as it’s even heavier and thicker than some 18-inch alternatives, and the battery didn’t hold out for long even in less demanding circumstances. Still, the Neo 18 is a great pick if you’re looking for a semi-portable alternative to a gaming desktop.
