Acer Aspire R14 R3-471TG-552E
Convertible laptops are becoming quite a popular trend and Acer has made a 14 inch option whose display can twist 360 degrees to achieve four viewing modes. In addition to the normal laptop mode, the keypad can be twisted all the way to the back to give a notepad mode, or twisted into L shape for watching videos and a tent shape for easy display while busy working with your hands. The 14 inch screen has a resolution is 1366 x 768 pixels and is multi-touch sensitive. The screen features the new Zero Air Gap technology that makes graphics appear sharper, more colorful and more vibrant. As you flip the convertible around, the screen will automatically detect your preferred orientation and adjust to it accordingly. The plastic body cover is made to look and feel like aluminum and that really gives it a classy and elegant feel. However is does weigh almost 2 kg and is 2.5 cm thick, which is not really slim. This convertible is powered by an Intel Core i5 -4210U processor that clocks at up to 1.7 GHz, which is combined with an Nvidia GeForce 820M graphics card, 8 GB of RAM and 1 TB of internal storage. Another great feature is that the touchpad has precision technology that can distinguish accidental bumps or scratches from real and intentional movements. Overall, it is worth considering if you want versatility in usage.Specifications

Small and simple. Acer presents a 14-inch convertible dubbed Aspire R14 R3-471TG-552E that is to convince us with its elegant design, a 360-degree display, and decent system performance. Unfortunately, the screen does not quite meet our expectations.

There’s a lot to like about the Acer Aspire R14. At only $650 it’s affordable and looks great with its faux aluminum design. The device is powerful enough to handle most computing tasks and the Zero Air Gap screen design allows for precise and responsive touch controls. Unfortunately none of that makes up for the fact that the underlying display is subpar. The limited 1366 x 768 resolution isn’t really acceptable these days considering the laptop’s cost. The screen not only suffers from narrow viewing angles but the glossy screen surface is even more problematic due to its highly reflective nature.

The Acer Aspire R 14 (R3-471T-77HT) will certainly last all day and into the night on battery power. It's also a very good performer on our benchmark tests, even if its margin of victory is slight. It's therefore unfortunate that the rest of the system is so lackluster. Lots of little stumbles, like the mass of bloatware, loud touchpad, lack of Bluetooth and 5GHz Wi-Fi, and fuzzy, low-resolution screen keep the Aspire R 14 from earning a higher score. While $230 more expensive, the HP Spectre x360 13t (13-4003) holds on as our Editors' Choice midrange convertible-hybrid laptop because it has a clearer IPS screen with 1080p HD native resolution, much less bloatware, and better connectivity, including 802.11ac.

More than just a seductive design, the Acer Aspire R 14 ($700 as reviewed) is a solid hybrid with a lot of power under the hood. This 2-in-1 boasts a 6th-generation Core i5 processor that delivers great performance and speakers that pump out excellent audio, and it has enough battery life to outlast its competitors. Unfortunately, typing on the Aspire R 14's keys resulted in finger discomfort.

Not without flaws. With the Aspire R14, Acer has a slim 14-inch convertible with a 360-degree rotatable display in its lineup. However, it is not a bargain at a demanded price of a good 1100 Euros (~$1195). The laptop has some shortcomings despite its high price.

And yes, Acer’s Aspire R 14 still proves itself as a decent little halfway point for people not convinced that 13 inch laptops are big enough and yet have realised that most 15 inch computers are rubbish. At that point, the Acer Aspire R 14 serves a decent option, because you get the guts of a 13 inch in the body of something a little larger, with a battery to match. If the battery is the big deal and you tend to do a lot of work, Acer’s R 14 is definitely worth a look, provided you can deal with that screen.

The latest Acer Aspire R 14 is a reasonably priced convertible-hybrid laptop with a lot going for it. Its improvements over its last iteration include a large 1080p HD touch screen, forward-looking technology like a USB-C port, dual-band Wi-Fi, a powerful sixth-generation Intel Core i5 processor, and strong battery life, all at a really good price for a midrange laptop. It has a larger screen, better battery life, and better 3D performance than the HP Spectre x360 13t (13-4003), our former Editors' Choice, for $300 less. True, the Aspire R 14 is slightly larger and heavier than the HP Spectre x360, but not prohibitively so. As such, the Aspire R 14 is our Editors' Choice for midrange convertible-hybrid laptops.

Like buying a laptop, with the myriad combinations of processors, screens, storage schemes, and more, 2-in-1 hybrids aren’t easy to distinguish and select among. Unlike in their early days, when they tended to exact a premium, their prices and configurations are splintering into shards fine enough that spending a little extra to get a nicer item is almost always an option for most models.

The Aspire R14 is excellent value with crisp performance. No important corners are cut in terms of the hardware and it’s a decent looking machine, too. It’s a little thick and heavy compared with premium Ultrabooks, and the screen is average at best, but you’d be hard pressed to find a better value alternative that matches its specs and good looks.

Acer: The company was founded under the name of Multitech in Taiwan in 1976 and renamed to Acer or Acer Group in 1987. The product range includes, for example, laptops, tablets, smartphones, desktops, monitors and televisions. Gateway Inc. and Packard Bell also belong to the Group and sell their own laptops.
While Acer still had the third largest global market share in the notebook segment in 2008, it ranked 6th in 2016 with a market share of 6% after they had continuously lost market shares.
There are dozens of Acer laptop reviews per month, the ratings are average (as of 2016). Gateway, which has an own laptop line-up, has also belonged to the Acer Group since 2007.

Intel Core i7: The Intel Core i7 for laptops is based on the LG1156 Core i5/i7 CPU for desktops. The base clock speed of the CPUs is relatively low, but because of a huge Turbo mode, the cores can dynamically overclock to up to 3.2 GHz (920XM). Therefore, the CPU can be as fast as high clocked dual-core CPUs (using single threaded applications) but still offer the advantage of 4 cores. Because of the large TDP of 45 W / 55 W, the CPU is only intended for large laptops.
5500U: Broadwell-based ULV (ultra low voltage) dual-core processor for notebooks and ultrabooks. Offers an integrated HD Graphics 5500 GPU and is manufactured in 14 nm.
6500U: Skylake-based ULV dual-core processor for thin notebooks and ultrabooks. Offers an integrated HD Graphics 520 GPU and is manufactured in 14 nm.
