Acer's Aspire 5742-7120 takes many of the solid features found in the previous 5740 model and updates a few for increased performance. For just around $650, the system offers some solid performance with the new Core i3-370M processor and 4GB of DDR3 memory. Where Acer falls behind others though is in the number of trialware applications installed that impact the performance.

The Acer Aspire AS5742Z-4097 laptop covers the basics by supplying a dual-core CPU, a roomy 15.6-inch display, and a Webcam, while doubling down on the warranty, providing two years of coverage. There's nothing wrong with this $500 laptop, but Core i3-based models cost only $100 and more offer a substantial boost in performance and battery life.

For $549, the Acer Aspire 5742-6814 is a pretty good value. You get a somewhat plain but fairly portable 15-inch design, a spacious keyboard, and strong dual-core performance, all for just a little bit more than the cost of an iPad. Still, we wish the audio and battery life were better. For just $20 more, you can get a similarly configured HP G62t with ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5740 graphics. And, if you want to splurge a little, the $629 Samsung SF510 has a very distinctive design that makes it look far more expensive. Still, you can't quibble with what the Aspire 5742 offers, which is more than enough power for everyday computing.

Probably the first thing you’ll notice about the Acer Aspire 5742 is its appearance; for such a cheap notebook it looks really slick, with a carbon fibre like finish that has a great tactile feel. All up this notebook’s only downsides are the small amount of RAM and tiny directional keys, while the pros are numerous. The Acer Aspire 5742 looks and performs great, and for such a low price you really can’t go wrong.

With the Acer Aspire AS5742-6811 you don't have to sacrifice performance to save money at the register. Granted, you don't get as robust feature set and as many wireless features as you do with the HP Pavilion dv6-6013cl (which has both WiDi2 and WiMAX), and the AS5742-6811 uses first-generation Core i technology, whereas the HP dv6-6013cl touts the newer Sandy Bridge platform. That aside, when it comes to raw computing power the Acer Aspire AS5742-6811 offers the greatbang for your buck in a budget laptop.
