Acer Aspire 3830TG Series
With the Aspire TimelineX series Acer have slim consumer notebooks in shelf. Depending on your needs Acer offer the notebooks with 15.6, 14 or 13.3-inch screen. The last one is found in the 3830TG, which target different user groups. The display have a resolution of the usual 1366 x 768 pixels in 16:9 format. The majority of written reviews criticize the measured values and the glossy screen surface. In terms of hardware Acer sell the 3830TG with Intel's mainstream CPU Core i5-2410M or and Intel Core i7-2620M Quad-Core plus a Solid State Drive (SSD). Furthermore a Nvidia GeForce GT 540M graphics card with DDR3-RAM boosts the system up.
Advantages are the available ports, an outstanding battery lifetime and a low idle power consumption. Disadvantages which are found in many reviews are of integrated six cell battery, the load temperatures, the bad speaker-system and quick CPU throttling in everyday life. These points attract each other with slight variations by all units of the new Aspire TimelineX series. Finally the last point is probably the most serious minus on the 3830TG.
Basically the Acer Aspire TimelineX 3830TG is a very attractive package that is available from € 699 in Germany. It combines performance and mobility, but the hardware throttling is a minus that Acer still couldn’t or wouldn't fix till today?

Small Flaw, Big Effect. Acer has come out the with the new generation of Aspire TimelineX notebooks and the series wouldn't be complete without a 13.3" subnotebook. Speedy hardware, a classy design and a long battery life all sound pretty good. But how does the CPU throttling issue affect this compact laptop's actual performance?

It's been an obsession lately: companies sacrificing performance jacking up prices on ultraportables to construct the thinnest bodies for their design-obsessed customer base. The Acer Aspire AS3830TG-6431 makes sure that its low price is the first thing customers see, and then knocks them off their feet with very fast parts and splendid battery life, though its four-pound frame isn't ideal for an ultraportable. The Toshiba Portege R835-P50X is still the ultraportable to beat, but Acer's little gem isn't too far behind.

The Acer Aspire TimelineX AS3830TG-6431 offers a list of strengths as long as its unwieldy name. Acer started with a thin, attractive shell for this 13.3-inch laptop, then added the latest performance components and a long-lasting battery. This 13.3-inch notebook offers an attractively thin design and strong performance in a low-cost package. Just be aware of the sealed-in battery and lack of a DVD drive.

A few years ago, the Acer TimelineX was one of the first of what we then called "thin and light" laptops, 13-inchers with sleeker, lighter frames, long battery life, and a more easily portable design than a standard notebook. The aggressively priced Acer Aspire TimelineX 3830TG-6431's combination of gaming-ready graphics and a fast processor in a 13-inch body offers a great punch for a good price, provided you can live without a DVD drive.

The Acer 3830TG is a decently built machine, that learned from the mistakes of its predecessor (at least when it comes to the keyboard) and also added some very decent hardware. Also, it has a good video card that allows for some smooth gaming and HD playback, all this in a package that’s not very expensive if you look at what’s cooking right now on the market. Sure, it has its flaws in terms of display quality, noise and, under certain circumstances, battery life, but these are all passable for a mainstream laptop.

For its $779 price, the Acer Aspire TimelineX 3830TG-6431 provides a lot of power in a very compact package. Its two-tone blue-and-silver design is attractive, and Nvidia's Optimus technology lets users play the latest games and get nearly 7 hours of battery life. Thanks to Dolby's technology, this 13-inch notebook sounds good, too. What prevents this machine from being an Editor's Choice pick is the relatively small touchpad and warm temperatures during extended use. Overall, though, the TimelineX 3830TG is an excellent value with plenty of style.

Throttling reloaded. If the Core i5 already moaned as a consequence of heat issues, what will a Core i7 do? Acer isn't afraid of taking risks and sets up a (potential) dream of mobility with an SSD, strong graphics and a swift processor and 8 GB of RAM.

Acer: In 1976, the company was founded in Taiwan under the name Multitech and was renamed Acer or Acer Group in 1987. The product range includes, for example, laptops, tablets, smartphones, desktops, monitors, TVs and computer peripherals. Since 2007, the group has merged with Gateway Inc. and Packard Bell, which also market their own laptop product lines.
Acer computers are designed for a variety of purposes, including ultrabooks for mobile use, gaming laptops for gamers, affordable options for everyday tasks, and 2-in-1 convertible laptops for versatility. Acer's product portfolio also includes tablets that offer portable computing and multimedia capabilities.
Non demanding games should be playable with these graphics cards.
NVIDIA GeForce GT 540M:
Mid-range graphics card based on the GT 435M chip (GF108) with higher clock rates and DDR3 support.

Intel Core i5:
2410M:
Dual-core processor based on the Sandy Bridge architecture with an integrated graphics card and dual-channel DDR3 memory controller. The CPU is clocked at 2.3 GHz (Turbo Boost 2.6-2.9 GHz) and the GPU at 650 (1200 MHz Turbo).
Intel Core i7: The Intel Core i7 for laptops is based on the LG1156 Core i5/i7 CPU for desktops. The base clock speed of the CPUs is relatively low, but because of a huge Turbo mode, the cores can dynamically overclock to up to 3.2 GHz (920XM). Therefore, the CPU can be as fast as high clocked dual-core CPUs (using single threaded applications) but still offer the advantage of 4 cores. Because of the large TDP of 45 W / 55 W, the CPU is only intended for large laptops.
2620M: Very fast Dual-core processor based on the Sandy Bridge architecture with an integrated graphics card and dual-channel DDR3 memory controller.
