AMD captures record 28.7 percent desktop CPU market share
AMD just scored its most significant quarterly jump in desktop CPU market share since 2016, grabbing 28.7 percent of the market in Q3 2024, according to a fresh report from Mercury Research. That’s a solid 5.7 percent bump from the last quarter and a 9.6 percent boost compared to the previous year.
The chip maker’s share of desktop revenue also went up to 27.3 percent, 7.7 percent higher than last year. This jump points to strong sales of their higher-end processors, especially their 3D V-Cache models and the newly released Ryzen 9000 series.
AMD secured 22.3 percent of the market in the mobile CPU game, up from 20.3 percent in Q2 2024. Their revenue share in this sector reached 19.2 percent, rising from 17.7 percent in the previous quarter. A lot of this success is thanks to their Ryzen AI 300-series APUs.
The server market also brought good news, with AMD’s share hitting 24.2 percent in Q3 2024, up from 23.3 percent year-over-year. More impressive, their server revenue share increased to 33.9 percent, compared to 31.2 percent in Q3 2023. For the first time, AMD’s data center business outdid Intel’s data center and AI group, raking in $3.549 billion, while Intel earned $3.3 billion.
Intel still holds the most significant chunk of the market, with 71.3 percent in desktops and 77.7 percent in the mobile segment. Mercury Research mentioned that Intel blamed its dip in desktop share on some inventory adjustments at a customer’s site, hinting at a possible rebound in Q4 2024.
