AMD Ryzen 9 7940HX and 7840HX to launch soon as underclocked Ryzen 9 7945HX and 7845HX variants

While AMD's Ryzen 9 7945HX and Ryzen 9 7945HX3D performed spectacularly in our benchmarks, laptops powered by the Dragon Range processors are few and far between. That situation might change in the coming weeks but at the expense of even more confusion. Golden Pig Upgrade over at Bilibili (via Videocardz) states that AMD has two new high-end laptop processors up its sleeve, the Ryzen 9 7940HX and the Ryzen 9 7840HX.

The leaker adds both chips will have identical specs as their xx45 counterparts, with the only difference being clocks. Therefore, the Ryzen 9 7940HX will still launch as a 16-core CPU and the Ryzen 9 7840HX as a 12-core part. Unfortunately, there is no word about when either CPU will be released. This will make things infinitely more confusing for the Chinese market as one will have three similarly-named CPUs on the market: the Ryzen 9 7940HX, Ryzen 9 7940H, and Ryzen 9 7940HS. Furthermore, it disregards AMD's own nomenclature (7045 for Dragon Range, 7040 for Phoenix), making it even harder for end users to distinguish between hardware.

The Ryzen 9 7940HX and Ryzen 9 7840HX may launch as China-only models. They could end up in high-end, but not quite flagship, laptops paired with upper-mid-range Nvidia/AMD graphics cards. A global release would be ideal, but it wouldn't matter much if OEMs refused to use the SKUs in their high-end laptops.
