If you ask some people, nostalgia is the sole reason for the success of shows like Stranger Things. No matter what we tell ourselves, there are some things that will always have a soft spot in our memories. The developers of these titles hope to tap into some of that nostalgia factor to deliver memorable gaming experiences.

1. The Callisto Protocol

Fans of Deadspace will almost certainly be delighted to find out that The Callisto Protocol seems to have taken more than a little inspiration from what was arguably the best sci-fi horror game series of its time. The Callisto Protocol takes place aboard a maximum-security prison on one of Jupiter's moons, Callisto. When the prison inmates are suddenly turned into horrific monstrosities, you must survive and navigate your way out of Black Iron Prison while uncovering the dark secrets of your fellow inmates.

The Callisto Protocol seems to feature much of what made the original Deadspace games great—gruesome close-quarters combat, unique weaponry, well-timed jumpscares, and a vicious curbstomp you can use when things get gnarly. The Callisto Protocol is slated for release on 2 December, 2022. You can pre-order The Callisto Protocol on Steam for US$59.99, but you should wait for reviews to drop before you spend any of your hard-earned pesos on it.

2. Palworld

Growing up playing Pokemon, many of us were often left wanting more of the immense world Nintendo created. Sure, the Pokemon games let you catch, battle, breed, and raise pocket monsters, but there is not much more to it than that—although Pokemon gamers definitely found more depth in the game than one might expect. Palworld is a massively-multiplayer, open-world, survivalcraft game that takes the concept of Pokemon to the next level by encouraging players to catch, befriend, battle, train, or even enslave and eat their Pals—all in glorious 3D graphics.

While Ash Ketchum almost certainly wouldn't approve of Pikachu running around with an SMG, Palworld definitely looks like it'll be good fun—and possibly even an incidental critique of modern capitalism—when it launches in 2023.

If you're all about the retro aesthetic, but don't want to give up functionality, the 8Bitdo SN30 Pro USB Gamepad is a fully-featured, retro-styled controller that you can find on Amazon.

3. The Wandering Village

If you were ever a fan of Studio Ghibli productions, The Wandering Village sure looks like a game that will scratch an itch you might not have known you had. The premise of the game is pretty simple—you are a member of a village that lives atop a giant wandering beast that explores the beautiful, desolate world. As the main character, you must work to lead your village, work with the people, and form a symbiotic relationship with the majestic mobile creature until you can find a more permanent dwelling away from the toxic spores that ravaged your world.

The Wandering Village is, unfortunately, still pretty far out—only projected to launch in 2023—but it certainly seems worth adding to a wishlist to keep an eye on, especially if you like city-building games with a twist.

4. Compound Fracture

If you were one of those kids that spent all of their time—and money—in the arcade, you might want to put Compound Fracture on your radar. The game doesn't appear to be anything ground-breaking, but it hearkens back to arcade shooters like Dino Crisis, Jurassic Park, and Primeval Hunt, strongly featuring horror, survival, and story elements. In Compound Fracture, you are an inspector who must make their way through a ChronoGas petroleum refinement facility while outsmarting and outgunning myriad time-displaced dinosaurs to survive.

There's no release date for Compound Fracture just yet, but it looks to be worth keeping an eye on if you want to relive the glory days of a light gun and a pocket full of coins.
