In case you haven't seen it on the news and/or social media already, the Las Vegas Sphere is a cutting-edge entertainment venue that is pushing the boundaries of visual technology. The Sphere features immersive displays powered by a whopping 150 Nvidia RTX A6000 GPUs. These GPUs generate visuals for the giant floor-to-ceiling 16×16K displays inside the Sphere, and the venue's exterior, known as the Exosphere, which is equipped with 1.2 million programmable LED pucks. This setup makes the Exosphere the world's largest LED screen.
To make sure all these displays are in sync, Nvidia's BlueField Data Processing Units (DPUs) and ConnectX-6 Dx Network Interface Cards (NICs) play a key role. They provide the necessary network infrastructure to support the high data throughput required by the Sphere’s advanced displays.
Recognized as one of TIME’s Best Inventions of 2023, the Sphere has hosted various events, ranging from concerts to large corporate gatherings. This list is only expected to grow in the future. The venue opened with a 40-show run by rock band U2 starting September 29, 2023.
Sphere Studios also developed the Big Sky camera system, capable of capturing uncompressed 18K images from a single camera. This allows the studio to film content for Sphere without needing to stitch multiple camera feeds together. The studio’s custom image processing software runs on Lenovo servers powered by Nvidia A40 GPUs.
