This X-COM-style feudal Japan RPG is Free to Play for a limited time
Playtest sign-ups are now open on Steam for Shadow of the Road, a tactical CRPG set in feudal Japan. The game is being developed by Another Angle Games and published by Owlcat, known for the Pathfinder and Warhammer CRPGs.
Set in the 1860s, the traditionalist forces of Shogun Tokugawar are at war with the technologically advanced might of the British East Nippon Company. You take on a mission to protect a young boy with untold powers.
There will be different characters that aid you in your quest, each with their motivations and goals. You must "guide your band of warriors in both combat and conscience."
The combat is turn-based, and each member of your party has their own set of skills and abilities to use in battle. Your in-game relationships with these characters will also affect how encounters play out. The open alpha will have four unique characters to choose from.
The open alpha looks promising, with an intriguing mix of magic and machinery set in a steampunk-like world. There are several battles to engage in, along with a boss fight. There is a main quest line to complete and several side quests that fill out the game's setting more.
You can sign up for the playtest on the Steam page, and you should see the game in your library once your request is approved.
