The ProArt Studiobook 16 OLED is fast, but too loud

Asus has upgraded its Studiobook 16 for 2023. The DialPad for creative users remains, but the processor is now much faster. However, the cooling has more work to do, which is noticeable through the loud fans.

Many manufacturers now offer high-performance laptops for content creators, i.e. users who do a lot of image and video editing. Fast components and often high-quality displays with extended color spaces are the name of the game here. The ProArt Studiobook 16 from Asus, which has received some updates for the current model year, also falls into this category. The manufacturer has even opted for the fastest mobile processor from Intel, namely the Raptor Lake Core i9-13980HX. This offers significantly more performance than the old Core i9-12900H of the previous model, but also needs a lot of power. AMD's current Ryzen 9 7945HX is significantly more efficient and faster.

The graphics card has changed from the GeForce RTX 3070 Ti to the GeForce RTX 4070 Laptop, although the speed advantage here remains negligible in most situations. However, the cooling has its limits, because fan noise exceeds 55 dB(A) in Full Performance mode. This is a lot and quickly gets annoying without headphones. At least performance remains stable, which also applies to the fast PCIe 4.0 SSD. In terms of maintenance options, the Studiobook offers two slots each for RAM and SSDs.

The DialPad is also specially designed for creative users - a rotary pushbutton between the touchpad and the keyboard. Of course, use of the DialPad depends on whether it is supported by the corresponding software, but operation works well, especially in tandem with Adobe apps. A stylus can also be used, since Asus has installed a capacitive OLED touchscreen. Consequently, this also means that bright surfaces appear slightly grainy. We also detected color deviations that we were unable to correct via our calibration. In addition, the OLED screen requires a lot of power, which has a negative impact on battery life. Users shouldn't expect more than 4-5 hours in practice. Asus offers a software solution against the potentially harmful PWM flickering, but this always has to be adjusted via the MyAsus software, which is somewhat cumbersome.

All in all, the Studiobook 16 is a good multimedia notebook with fast hardware, but the loud fans in particular are annoying in everyday use. Furthermore, we're not sure whether a mini LED panel would not have been a better choice here. Read our detailed review for further information on the ProArt Studiobook 16 OLED.
