The 8110 (4G) is a reprise of a classic Nokia phone of the same name, released at MWC last year. However, its KaiOS meant that it had reduced functionality compared to the average Android or iOS device. With the roll-out of a compatible WhatsApp version, this has been remedied slightly.

HMD Global's management of the Nokia brand has involved some serious fan-service that has worked out to good effect for the company. One example of this strategy is the design and release of the 8110 (4G). This device could be considered a considerable update for its original slider template. Then again, it would not have seemed out of place in the movie that made the "banana phone" famous in the first place.

This device runs a version of KaiOS, a prominent alternative to iOS or Android that is often destined for nostalgia-stoking Nokias like the 8110 4G. Its incredibly streamlined set of features might benefit those looking to reduce their screen-time, but could be frustrating for others.

For example, the 8110, despite its appreciable connectivity, could not use WhatsApp up to as late as April 2019. However, KaiOS and HMD Global have finally rectified this situation, meaning that users of this classic-looking feature-phone have another option for calls and texts. However, the only region to have access to this new app thus far is India. Hopefully, it will be distributed to neo-8110 users in the future: not everyone likes being left out of the matrix.
