It looks like the long-awaited arrival of the WH-1000XM6 is finally on the horizon. Officially, Sony has not revealed anything yet about offering a successor to the ageing WH-1000XM5. Instead, it continues to promote the WF-C710N (curr. $119.99 on Amazon) as its latest consumer audio product, which it launched last month alongside refreshes of its WH-CH520 and WH-CH720N over-ear headphones.
Nonetheless, The Walkman Blog has discovered a crucial piece in the WH-1000XM6 puzzle. As the screenshot below shows, Sony has received Made for iPhone/iPod/iPad (MFi) certification from Apple for a device bearing the model number YY2984. Although the new certifications do not reveal what YY2984 could be, the model number has previously been linked to the WH-1000XM6.
Typically, Apple publishes MFi certifications shortly before a device's release. Based on recent suggestions, Sony will unveil the WH-1000XM6 in May but without successors to the WF-1000XM5 in tow. By contrast, the WF-1000XM6 are not expected to launch until later this year. As evidence to their separate release schedules, nothing concrete has surfaced online about the WF-1000XM6 yet. Meanwhile, the appearance of the WH-1000XM6 on Apple's MFi certification database implies that we are not far off from seeing more substantial WH-1000XM6-related leaks appear online.
