Touch-book. Sony is affordable. A real SSD, high-end aluminum chassis and touchscreen for 885 Euros (~$1164). A premium Vaio for little money?

The T Series 13 starts at $669 with a Core i3 processor, non-touch display, and 320GB hard drive plus 32GB flash cache. Our test unit's $899 price comes from upgrading to the Core i5 chip ($70), a 500GB hard drive ($30), 6GB of memory ($30), and the touch screen ($100). All models come with a very good selection of other software, in addition to the touch-aware apps detailed earlier.

Sony has essentially taken their 13-inch ultrabook model and scaled it up with a 14-inch display for the SVT14117CXS. This wouldn't be bad necessarily if they added extra performance or features for it. Instead, it features that same basic display resolution while adding extra size and weight. To make matters worse, it even has a smaller battery pack for less running time than its smaller version.

It's hard to recommend the Sony VAIO T13122CXS. At first glance the device is sleek and beautiful, but looks alone are not enough to carry a device, or justify a $700 price tag. While the notebook excels in certain areas, its faults all but negate those strong points. It offers a beautiful chassis, but the display is underwhelming; and where it has a comfortable quality keyboard, the multi-gesture touch is all but incompatible with Windows 8.

The $1,099 Sony VAIO T Series 15 Touch Ultrabook combines fast performance in a portable design. Its design stands out from the crowd, but still exudes a level of sophistication that will appeal to both student and mobile professionals. The full HD touch-screen display is beautiful, but the battery life and mushy keyboard leave something to be desired.

Against the flow. Sony equips its first 15-inch ultrabook with a Full HD resolution and touchscreen right away. Less than 900 Euros (~$1171) also appears very low compared with The Spectre XT Touchsmart 15 and ZenBook UX51VZ. Where's the catch?

First came the ultrabooks, and then came Windows 8, Now touch screens have come to reshape the laptop landscape. The Sony VAIO T15 Touch ultrabook offers solid performance, a healthy feature set, and a generous selection of software.

When stacked up against other touch-enabled ultrabooks, the Sony VAIO T15 Touch (SVT15112CXS) is an able, if not jaw dropping, system. It offers a healthy selection of features, from the hot-new-thing touch screen to the increasingly hard-to-find optical drive, and it adds a healthy serving of value with several premium programs and enticing service trials bundled with it. It doesn't supplant the Editors' Choice Asus Zenbook Prime Touch UX31A-BHI5T, but it makes a solid showing without a premium price.

An entry-level Sony Vaio T is priced at just $669. That, however, is without the touchscreen, solid-state drive, or processor upgrade. Adding those features bumps the price up to a far less affordable $1,149. There are plenty of Ultrabooks that sell for that much or more, but most offer a better display. Our review unit’s dismal 1366 x 768 panel can’t compete in the premium market.

There’s no single feature of the T Series 13 that is particularly eye-catching or innovative. However, it does provide you with an ultraportable design with good performance and battery life for well under £800, which – regardless of what you think about touch-screens on laptops – still makes it good value for money when compared to many of its ultrabook rivals.

The Sony Vaio T-13 (SVT13126CNS) is a fairly premium ultrabook at is price. But that is only if you really need the touchscreen capabilities in addition. You might be better off considering the HP Spectre XT, the HP Envy 4 or the Lenovo IdeaPad U410 in case a capable ultrabook is all you need. And for the price it is available at, we would recommend it any day. The touchscreen is an additional bonus over the previous generation. However, if you aren't very finicky about having a touchscreen, the slimmer HP Spectre XT might be worth considering.

Intel Core i5:
3317U: Ivy-Bridge-based ULV-CPU in Q2 2012. Offers a core clock of 1.7 - 2.6 GHz and an HD 4000 GPU (350 - 1050 MHz). The TDP is rated at 17 W.
3337U: Ivy-Bridge-based ULV-CPU in Q1 2013. Offers a core clock of 1.8 - 2.7 GHz and an HD 4000 GPU (350 - 1100 MHz). The TDP is rated at 17 W.
Intel Core i7: The Intel Core i7 for laptops is based on the LG1156 Core i5/i7 CPU for desktops. The base clock speed of the CPUs is relatively low, but because of a huge Turbo mode, the cores can dynamically overclock to up to 3.2 GHz (920XM). Therefore, the CPU can be as fast as high clocked dual-core CPUs (using single threaded applications) but still offer the advantage of 4 cores. Because of the large TDP of 45 W / 55 W, the CPU is only intended for large laptops.
3517U: Fast Ivy-Bridge-based ULV-CPU in Q2 2012. Offers a core clock of 1.9 - 3.0 GHz and an HD 4000 GPU (350 - 1150 MHz). The TDP is rated at 17 W.

Intel Core i3:
3217U: Ivy-Bridge-based ULV-CPU in Q2 2012. Offers a core clock of 1.8 GHz (no Turbo Boost) and an HD 4000 GPU (350 - 1050 MHz). The TDP is rated at 17 W.
13.3: This is a common display format for subnotebooks. Netbooks, UMPC and some subnotebooks have tinier displays. Nevertheless, the majority of standard laptops has a higher format. The advantage of a small display is, that the subnotebook can be small dimensioned and can be carried easily. Further the small display needs few energy, which improves the battery runtime and in consequence the mobility. The disadvantage is that the reading of texts is a bit exhausting for the eyes, especially with high resolutions.
14.0: 14 inch display size is a mixture between the small formats of subnotebooks and the 15 inch standard display. The reason why so many people like displays with medium size is, that this size is not exhausting for the eyes, does not need too much energy and the laptops can be kept quite compact.
15.6: 15 inch display-variants are the standard and are used for more than the half of all notebooks. 15.4 inch display with 16:10 are the standard for notebook displays. However nowadays, more and more 16:9 displays with 15.6 inch appear. The reason why so many people like displays with medium size is, that this size is not exhausting for the eyes, does not need too much energy and the laptops can be kept quite compact.
» To find out how fine a display is, see our DPI List.
1.6 kg:
This sub-notebook weighs less than the average of all notebooks and represents a medium class of weight among the sub-notebooks. 11 inch displays are normal for this class of weight.
2.3 kg:
These sub-notebooks weight less than the average of all notebooks, but represent a heavier class of weight among the sub-notebooks. 13 inch displays are normal for this class of weight.
78.12%: This rating is not convincing. The laptop is evaluated below average, this is not really a recommendation for purchase.
