Qualcomm is now thought to shake the mobile device world up once again with a major flagship processor re-brand, mirroring that of a mere 3 years ago when the Snapdragon "898" was introduced as the 8 Gen 1 instead.
Xiaomi is now tipped to introduce its long-anticipated 15 and 15 Pro as the world's first Android smartphones to owe their generational flagship performance boost to the Snapdragon 8 Elite rather than the 8 Gen 4 as generally assumed earlier.
The Gen n naming scheme might be dumped in order to make it clear that the 8 Elite and its descendants are the mobile counterparts for the new, top-tier X Elite chip for PCs.
Should that be the case, the change might imply other interesting permutations, such as the existence of a Snapdragon 8 Plus that might supersede the current 8s Gen 3 sub-flagship processor for smartphones, and so on - however, there has been no word on what happens to the 7 series under this alleged new system.
Then again, all this new speculation is based on a single poster allegedly dug up by SmartPrix to date. Apparently put together by Xiaomi, it announces the name-change and that it takes effect as of the launch of the 8 Gen 3-powered 14-series' successors on October 23, 2024.
On the other hand, it could also explain the otherwise cryptic 2-word ("Snapdragon Elite") Weibo post on the part of legendary leaker Digital Chat Station earlier today (September 26, 2024).
