Rumor | Snapdragon 8 Gen 4: Leak touts Apple A18 Pro-crushing performance for next-gen Qualcomm chipset
Qualcomm is expected to launch its next-gen flagship chipset, the Snapdragon 8 Gen 4, in the last quarter of the year. Tentative details of the SoC have leaked in the past, and a new one now provides a clearer image of what to expect from the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3's successor, well ahead of its launch.
According to a rumor on the grapevine, the Snapdragon 8 Gen 4 is expected to dominate its closest rival, Apple's A18 Pro, when it debuts. Supposedly, the Qualcomm chipset will achieve a Geekbench single-core score in the region of 3500, with the A18 Pro failing to get past the 3300 mark on the same test. For example, previous leaks indicated a single-core score in the 2800 range for the Snapdragon 8 Gen 4. In addition to said incredible single-core numbers, the Snapdragon 8 Gen 4 is also rumored to outperform the A18 Pro in both multi-core and GPU tests.
While those numbers sound fantastic on paper, reality may well be disappointing, as the leak also claims the Snapdragon 8 Gen 4's prime core could be clocked at 4.3 GHz, with a potential power draw of 1.3V. Those numbers are, of course, not viable on a smartphone at this point, and so we wouldn't place much stock in this leak. For some perspective, the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 already runs quite hot and has its prime core clocked at just 3.3 GHz.
According to rumors from China about Snapdragon 8 Gen 4, the required voltage to run it at 4.3 GHz is about 1.3 volts, if manufactured on TSMC N3E.

And you know, 1.3 volts is too high for mobile processors.
