The company SmallRig has launched something that might be for those in need of something besides the typical tripod or gimbal for their mobile photography or videography. The Fold P10 is a collapsible smartphone clamp designed to support two-handed use during filming. It also has cold-shoe mounts for a larger-scale set-up with external lights or mics.

Smartphones are being sold as all-in-one videography machines with a growing range of shot modes or options, often augmented with increasingly effective image stablization, these days. Nevertheless, users might still find their scene or sequence ambitions are still beyond them through holding the mobile device in question on its own.

Therefore, they often find themselves resorting to the additional purchase of a tripod or gimbal, which can get mechanical, elaborate and expensive as the aspiring mobile camera-person's needs grow. Furthermore, not even those devices may support the dedicated mics or lights some users might prefer over the default, miniaturized hardware in their phone.

Now, SmallRig purports to offer an effective alternative in a single form-factor. The Fold P10 "phone cage" does indeed come in an aluminum-alloy chassis with an innovative folding mechanism, extending from a starting size approximately that of an iPhone 12 to deploy a clamp for phones of between 63 and 98mm in length and up to 12mm in depth, with handles on either side.

Therefore, the user might be able to leave the case on their device, although SmallRig asserts the Fold P10 has the protective pads necessary to conserve a phone's finish in any case. Once fully unfolded, it exhibits dual hand-grips, 5 standard 1.4"-20 threaded holes and 3 cold shoes. Therefore, the user could attach a variety of external accessories for a potentially complete, monolithic mobile video rig.

Accordingly, the Fold P10 could be used two-handed (or one-handed, if desired) and could also conceivably be set on the ground for stability in some shots. SmallRig also suggest that a user could even attach multiple smartphones, should a project require it, one of which can be controlled via the clamp's in-built wireless control function for static shots while others continue to record video.

By the same token, one could also add an entire compact DSLR for the same kind of use-cases. SmallRig products are on Amazon; however, it only makes the Fold P10 available via its own website for US$54.90 at present. This implies the risk of incurring extra import taxes based on location, so it is best to ascertain this before splashing out on this potentially versatile phone accessory.
