Samsung's new ISOCELL HP1 billboard ad features a 200MP cat

In its run-up to a debut for its first-ever 200MP mobile image sensor, Samsung seems to have acquiesced to the fact that the first thing many users will do with the inaugural (possibly Motorola-brand) smartphone with the new ISOCELL HP1 is grab a shot of the nearest cat. Then again, the OEM has pre-empted these use-cases with what might be the biggest example of such a shot.

It consists of a billboard based on an image of the animal in question set up by the photographer Hyunjoong Kim using the HP1. Samsung asserts that it then took the resulting ultra-high-res file and split it between 12 2.3 meter (m)-long pieces of professionally-printed fabric, stitched together to create a single 28x22m billboard.

The HP1-equipped module was represented as affixed to a test board rather than integrated into a full mobile device; nevertheless, the team behind the new physical ad asserts that it was capable of reproducing the detail necessary for the ad-industry-grade output (albeit with profressional tweaking and optimizations).

The ISOCELL HP1 is indeed rated for new ChamelonCell pixel-binning technology, which affords the option to combine the sensor's 0.64 micron (μm) individual pixels into 1.28μm 'squares' (or bins) for 50MP images, or even larger, 2.56μm bins for 12.5MP images of potentially unprecedented low-light quality.
