Possible October 2012 launch for iPad mini

Teaser
Citing unnamed sources, AllThingsD.com claims the new iPad mini will launch in October 2012.

In a recent article, AllThingsD cited an unnamed source with insider information that the highly-anticipated launch of the Apple iPad mini has finally been set for October 2012. Another AllThingsD article claims that Apple intends to unveil the iPhone 5 in a separate launch event in early September. These claims contradict previous rumors suggesting that both devices would be released simultaneously this fall.

For those unfamiliar with the rumors that have surrounded the secretive iPad mini over the past nine months, the iPad mini is predicted to be a 7.85-inch tablet using the ever-popular iOS operating system and a display resolution comparable to that of the iPad 2. Built into a slim aluminum shell with a rear-facing camera, the tablet is predicted to have a price point between $249 and $299. This combination of form factor and price suggests that the iPad mini is being marketed as a direct competitor to the many budget-priced Android tablets, such as the Nexus 7 and Kindle Fire, currently available on the market.

This revelation comes a day after a landmark court decision to award Apple over $1 billion in damages after finding rival tablet and smartphone manufacturer Samsung guilty of patent infringement. The October launch time is also likely to precede the launch of the Windows 8-based Microsoft Surface tablet scheduled for October 26, 2012.
