Nothing promises to provide its inaugural smartphone, the Nothing Phone (1), with three Android OS upgrades. Following the debut on Android 13 last week, fans of the phone have quizzed CEO Carl Pei on the company's update plans. His reply? Well, not promising.

The Nothing Phone (1) made its debut last month as the company's first attempt at making a smartphone. The company promised three Android OS upgrades and four years of security updates in total, essentially matching companies like OnePlus and Xiaomi. That said, though, fans may have reason to be concerned in light of new information.

When quizzed on Twitter as to when Nothing would release the Android 13 update for its, company CEO Carl Pei had a rather non-committal reply: "A product is more than just its specs, features, and version numbers". That's definitely an answer, most would agree, albeit one that does nothing to provide information on Nothing's current plans for the Android 13 rollout to the Nothing Phone (1).

While there's likely nothing to be afraid of—the Nothing Phone (1) will almost definitely receive Android 13 in the future—it continues the trend of Nothing having a rather sketchy policy on marketing and engagement. A while ago, for example, the company, quietly changed its official marketing data on the Nothing Phone (1) display's brightness after review tests found the original claims to be bogus in real-world usage. Overpromise and underdeliver, some would say.
