During its September 12 Direct, Nintendo announced that it is releasing its classic Wii titles, Super Mario Galaxy and Super Mario Galaxy 2, for the Nintendo Switch and Switch 2.
Super Mario Galaxy was first released in 2007. The game went on to become a commercial success and even won a BAFTA Award for Best Game in 2008. Its sequel, Super Mario Galaxy 2, which was released in 2010, was nominated for the award in 2010.
While this is the first time Super Mario Galaxy 2 will be available on the Switch, the original was released for the handheld in 2020 as one of the games in the Super Mario 3D All-Stars collection which also includes Super Mario 64 and Super Mario Sunshine. Unfortunately, Super Mario 3D All-Stars was discontinued and removed from the eShop in March 2021.
Nintendo says this new release of the two games are enhanced versions with support for 1080p resolution on the Nintendo Switch and 4K resolution on the Nintendo Switch 2 (available to buy via invitation on Amazon for $449). It also revealed that the Super Mario Galaxy games have an improved UI, extra storybook chapters, and a new assist mode that makes the games easier to play.
Super Mario Galaxy and Super Mario Galaxy 2 will be available to buy separately for $39.99 per game or combined for $69.99. The games will be released on October 2 and are available to pre-order on Nintendo's website and on the eShop.
