Reviews for the Motorola Razr 2022
More cameras, larger battery, high-end SoC, and still cheaper - Motorola's Razr 2022 seems much more sophisticated than its direct predecessor at first glance. Find out here whether the foldable smartphone also convinces us in the test.

The Motorola Razr 2022 comes out to be a new hope for the company as it provides all of the exceptional features under the hood, and at the same time, it gives tough competition to other flip phones. It includes a powerful performance, decent camera results, good enough display resolution perks, and the latest android update. However, the battery life does feel underwhelming for this phone. But anyway, it’s a common trend that flip phones don’t have that much battery life in the first place since the company has to make the device compact. If we have to recommend any alternative options, it would be Samsung Galaxy Z Fold4. But if your budget is slightly less, we suggest you should go with Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 4. Finally, the decision is in your hands.

The original foldable Razr was certainly a looker, but it relied heavily on the nostalgia of the old clamshell with a lacklustre camera setup and middling performance despite a very high-end price tag. Thankfully, Motorola has fixed that with the Razr 2022. It’s no longer a compromise to own a foldable, offering flagship-level performance, a stunning display with a barely noticeable crease and a boosted camera setup that better allows the Razr to compete with high-end alternatives, both foldable and non-foldable. Sure, there are still a few compromises to be had, particularly around durability without any official water resistance, and the single Android OS update commitment is a massive disappointment compared to the four years of Samsung’s foldable, but it remains a solid choice that undercuts most of the foldable competition.

If you’re considering a foldable phone as your next device, the Motorola razr puts a lot of technology into your hands. It has the latest top-tier hardware including Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 processor, an advanced camera system with decent low light performance and 8K video recording. The Main and Quick Display screens are excellent, and the Flex View hinge really does add a new dimension in terms of how you use your phone for taking photos, watching videos and using apps. And with a price of $1,599, it’s great to see that Moto wants to put this phone into people’s pockets at a reasonable price given all the technology and features it delivers.

The original reborn Razr was a neat concept, but Motorola fumbled the execution – and its 5G follow-up wasn’t a huge departure. The same can’t be said for 2022 edition: it’s a fantastic foldable that gives up nothing over a traditional handset. There’s a clear lineage to those killer flip phones of the early Naughties, while also keeping pace with more modern clamshells like the Galaxy Z Flip 4. It lacks a few of the features found on Samsung’s phone, though, on both the hardware and software sides. Camera image quality could also be better, and while less expensive than previous versions it’s still a pricey bit of kit. Solid performance and a cracking pair of displays means there’s plenty here to like, though. If you prefer a more stock Android experience to Samsung’s heavy-handed approach, this is the folding phone that should be top of your list.

The Moto Razr 2022 currently retails for an eye-watering EUR 1,200 in its 256GB/8GB variant, and we just can't see ourselves justifying that price tag. Still, what seems expensive to us might just sound perfectly reasonable to some of you out there. If you are one of those people, we see no major or glaring flaws in the Razr 2022, and as long as you have your expectations in check regarding what it means to live with a 2022 clamshell foldable.

Motorola. Until Apple came along, no one mattered more in mobile than the company that built the first cellphone – and there was no phone more recognizable than the RAZR. That brand name redefined the first flip phones in 2004; it helped Android conquer the smartphone world in 2011; and it resurrected the flip phone in 2019 with the world’s first mass-market foldable (that also brought back the venerable brand name). But no amount of retro-futurism would hold off Samsung once the South Korean juggernaut decided it wanted a piece of the action. After a slow start with the Galaxy Z Flip, it went for the kill with the solid Z Flip 3 and excellent Galaxy Z Flip 4, each of which beat the Razr on the spec sheet and on the price list. For its part, Motorola kept the world waiting nearly two years for a response. And now that the phone is finally here, Motorola’s attitude seems to be: if you can’t resonate … emulate. I’m Michael Fisher and I’ve spent two months with the Motorola Razr 2022, a wide and weird effort to duplicate Samsung’s success – by copying the copycat.

A premium flip phone in almost every way, the Motorola Razr 2022 is packed with powerful hardware as well as high-quality displays on the front and inside. The camera system is good enough and it charges up quickly although you might find yourself a little underwhelmed by the battery life.

The Motorola RAZR 2022 is a big improvement over its predecessor in every area. Its design is refined, it finally has top-notch processing power, and both screens are brighter and better. The display has one of the smallest creases I’ve ever seen on a foldable device, which for me is a great advantage. Samsung’s Galaxy S22 Ultra and Apple’s iPhone 14 Pro Max are also similar in price to the Motorola RAZR 2022. When we compare it to these two, the RAZR simply looks like a phone with a much lower price tag. But if you’re a RAZR enthusiast, love the nostalgic look, and want a clamshell foldable phone with almost no creasing of its display, then the RAZR 2022 is your best and only choice.

This isn’t just an incremental update for Motorola. The Razr has experienced some major changes for 2022, ditching some of its more nostalgia-driven design details and delivering improvements to the camera, battery and processor. There’s still no wireless charging and the camera has a few drawbacks when it comes to the ultra-wide lens and its zoom capabilities. The IP rating is also quite low, meaning this phone might not be as waterproof as you’re used to. However, I wouldn’t let these drawbacks stop you from considering the Razr. If you were hesitant to buy a foldable when the Razr dropped in 2019, this is the update that could change your mind.

The Motorola Razr 2022 right now is recommended as an enthusiast-only device for anyone living outside China, because it requires importing, which marks up from the roughly $900 price and loses warranty. Since Motorola had released its previous foldables internationally before, there is a chance this third generation Razr will see a global release, but Motorola will have to figure out the camera situation before it becomes a suitable, viable alternative to the highly polished Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 4.

Model:
The latest to join the Motorola family is none other than the Motorola Razr. It is worth mentioning that the Razr 2022 is the same but different when compared to the 2020 Razr 5G. While this is unmistakably a Razr, this year the iconic chin is completely gone, for better or worse. On one hand, it no longer gets in the way of using the main screen when the phone is unfolded. However, it also means the phone loses some of its personality, looking similar to other clamshell foldables on the market. Even then, the phone still remains slick and desirable and it is clear, Motorola has refined things further with no visible screws on the hinge, for instance. Whether the users might like the new, slightly glittery, satin-textured rear cover will be down to personal preference, but previous models were far too slippery, so this model does add a bit more grip. It is worth noting that this applies to the lower section, whereas the top part with the secondary screen is all glass.
In terms of its display, this model has been equipped with the big 6.7in display, giving the likes of the Google Pixel 7 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max a run for their money, complete with a super-fast 144Hz refresh rate and HDR10+ support. It is quite ideal for watching videos on the punchy AMOLED screen. On the other hand, the external 2.7in HFD+ display offers a distinctly different experience from the 1.7in display on the Z Flip 4, with the ability to reply to incoming messages, open apps, control music and even access high-quality cameras for selfies. However, just as one might expect, the audio performance is not that impressive on the Razr, but it will suffice for watching TikToks and YouTube videos on the go. Overall, the Dolby Atmos support provides a high-quality audio experience with connected headphones, with tailored modes for everything from music to movies to podcasts.
As far as its performance is concerned, the new Motorola Razr has been incorporated with Qualcomm’s very power-efficient Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 chipset. While it was the very best chipset on the market at launch, it is worth noting that it has recently been replaced by the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2. Having said that, the pairing of the 8+ Gen 1 and 8GB of RAM makes for a speedy experience on the Razr, further enhanced by that buttery smooth 144Hz refresh rate that makes everything feel instantaneous. It is worth mentioning that there was no hint of stutter or lag no matter what was done on the phone, and considering its sleek form factor, that is pretty impressive. The camera setup has been one of the weakness of the original Razr with a single rear-facing 48Mp snapper and an internal 20Mp snapper. While it is undeniable that the pairing is fine, but nothing to brag about much. That has changed with this new Razr. The main show stealer has to be the rear-facing 50Mp snapper, with an aperture of f/1.8 and OIS. It is a great foldable phone to be explored, depending on the need and preference of the user.

Qualcomm Adreno 730: Graphics chip for smartphones and tablets that is integrated within the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 SoC. Qualcomm claims that it is 30% faster than the Adreno 660 in the Snapdragon 888 SoC. For Android it should be one of the fastest graphics cards in late 2021.
Modern games should be playable with these graphics cards at low settings and resolutions. Casual gamers may be happy with these cards.

SD 8+ Gen 1: High-end SoC for smartphones that was introduced in late 2021 and manufactured in 4 nm at TSMC. Integrates one “Prime Core” based on a ARM Cortex-X2 architecture clocked at up to 3.2 GHz. Three more performance cores are based on the A710 but clock up to 2.5 GHz. Furthermore, four energy saving cores are integrated that are based on the ARM Cortex-A510 architecture and clock at up to 1.8 GHz. In addition to the processor cores, the SoC integrates a WiFi 6e modem, a Hexagon DSP (for AI acceleration) and a Spectra ISP. The integrated memory controller supports fast LPDDR5 memory with up to 3,200 MHz. 5G is now included in the chip with the Snapdragon X65 modem. Compared to the non plus version, the 8+ Gen 1 offers a 200 MHz higher clocked Prime Core and a 10% higher clocked GPU. Furthermore, it is now produced at TSMC and not Samsung.» Further information can be found in our Comparison of Mobile Processsors.

It is a small display format for smartphones. You shouldn't be severely defective in vision, and you won't see much detail on the screen and only have a small resolution available. For that, the device should be small and handy, easy to transport.
