90% MSI GS60 2PE Ghost Pro 15.6 inch Laptop Review
Source: Kitguru English
It is true, the machine does run rather warm, and it emits a fair level of noise under heavy, sustained load. There is absolutely nothing MSI can do about this – apart from add in more fans and increase noise levels well past 40dBA. MSI have clearly spent some time in the R&D department, balancing the heat against noise emissions. Even though the machine does get very warm under load it never suffered from throttling during our tests. If you pick one up however, we do advise that you keep the rear vents clear from any obstructions. MSI are selling several versions of the MSI GS60 2PE Ghost Pro 15.6 inch Laptop. This particular model we reviewed today, is available from Overclockers UK for £1,399.99 inc vat, although it has just sold out as we went to press. MSI did tell us that this is one of their more popular models, and it isn’t difficult to see why.

Model:

Gaming laptops have always been noted to be the chubbier members of the laptop family but a trend of ultrabook-looking gaming laptops have been on a rise. An option in the slimmed down category is the MSI GS60. Housed in its light and thin package is one of the best mobile graphics cards with the Nvidia GeForce GTX 870M; you won’t see much problems playing most games at very high or even ultra graphic settings.

Couple that with a 4th generation i7 and 8 GBs of RAM, you will not have problems running any programs and games. It only comes with a standard 1 TB HDD though. Even the greatest and fastest gaming laptops can be held back with a subpar screen, however that is not the case here. It comes with a 15.3-inch panel with 1920 by 1080 resolution. It’s a great screen for gaming with its wide viewing angles, bright colors and non-reflective finish.

The keyboard is from SteelSeries, which allows you to customize each individual key’s specific functionality and also its LED backlight. As usual, gaming laptop’s major concern is battery life. The MSI GS60 only has a very average battery life reducing its portability as you always need to be near a power source.

For a gaming laptop that is as light and thin as the MSI, it performs very well but its battery life leaves a lot to be desired.

NVIDIA GeForce GTX 870M: High-end graphics card from the GeForce GTX 800M series.

These graphics cards are able to play the latest and most demanding games in high resolutions and full detail settings with enabled Anti-Aliasing.

Intel Core i7: The Intel Core i7 for laptops is based on the LG1156 Core i5/i7 CPU for desktops. The base clock speed of the CPUs is relatively low, but because of a huge Turbo mode, the cores can dynamically overclock to up to 3.2 GHz (920XM). Therefore, the CPU can be as fast as high clocked dual-core CPUs (using single threaded applications) but still offer the advantage of 4 cores. Because of the large TDP of 45 W / 55 W, the CPU is only intended for large laptops.

4700HQ: Haswell-based quad-core processor clocked at 2.4 GHz with Turbo Boost support up to 3.4 GHz. Offers an integrated HD Graphics 4600 GPU and a dual channel DDR3 memory controller.» Further information can be found in our Comparison of Mobile Processsors.

15.6": 15 inch display-variants are the standard and are used for more than the half of all notebooks. 15.4 inch display with 16:10 are the standard for notebook displays. However nowadays, more and more 16:9 displays with 15.6 inch appear. The reason why so many people like displays with medium size is, that this size is not exhausting for the eyes, does not need too much energy and the laptops can be kept quite compact.» To find out how fine a display is, see our DPI List.

2 kg: These sub-notebooks weight less than the average of all notebooks, but represent a heavier class of weight among the sub-notebooks. 12 inch displays are normal for this class of weight.

MSI: Micro-Star International (MSI), is a Taiwan based computer hardware manufacturer since 1986 best known for desktop computer motherboards. MSI also designs and manufactures graphics cards, barebone PCs, notebook computers, networking products, servers, multimedia, consumer electronics, and storage devices. MSI, as most Taiwanese computer manufacturers, sells products on OEM/ODM basis. It also sells products worldwide based on its own brand name "MSI". The market share of laptops with the MSI brand is rather low.
